OceanWorks International is a privately held subsea technology company that specializes in manned and unmanned subsea work systems and engineering/fabrication services for key international marine industries including International Military, Scientific, and Renewable Energy markets. Our Burnaby operation is focused on the design, assembly and testing of subsea technical solutions.


The Junior Electrical Engineer is responsible for detailed design and development of subsea electrical systems, including but not limited to preliminary and critical design and testing of electrical and electro-mechanical systems. The designs are to meet safety, functionality, manufacturability and cost requirements.


  • Support the electrical design and production of multi-disciplinary projects under the direction of a lead project engineer.
  • At times, work as a lead project engineer on small, primarily electrical projects under the direction of a systems engineer.
  • Design electrical systems including power distribution systems, electronic circuits, electrical assemblies, printed circuit boards, and integrated systems.
  • Perform design verification, production and assembly, integration and testing, system commissioning.
  • Develop and/or review detailed electrical engineering documentation including engineering specifications, bills of materials, process specifications (material specifications, work instructions, test procedures, etc.), calculations, analyses, technical data, electrical schematics and printed circuit boards, ICDs, engineering reports, assembly & installation instructions, operation & maintenance manuals, illustrations and presentations to enable the correct manufacture, assembly, installation and testing of subsea and related equipment.
  • Check and/or approve detailed electrical engineering documentation to ensure that designs meet the standards established by the company and required by customers.
  • Initiate / process ECOs and NCRs.
  • Identify and source components to be used in designs, including consideration of quality assurance requirements.
  • Maintain complete and accurate project records, including design calculations, design reviews, computer files, drawing files, correspondence, NCR/ECO’s, etc.
  • Meet project requirements and budget through adherence to the engineering design control process.
  • Provide technical assistance to manufacturing for sourcing, procurement, fabrication, testing, troubleshooting, installation, commissioning and operation of deliverable equipment, spare parts and test equipment.
  • Apply QA codes and process specifications to the configuration baseline.
  • Support field work and system commissioning including travel to remote locations when required.
  • Develop content for product manuals and training manuals and assist with technical training courses.
  • Assist preparation of design proposals including concept development, bidding and estimating.
  • As required, assume the role of electrical assembly technician.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned

  • Mechanical and electrical manufacturing, assembly and testing with exposure to typical workshop conditions.
  • Electrical testing and production oversight in high voltage environments.
  • Training and testing of various underwater devices including pressure testing and shallow water testing.
  • Requires wearing of personal protective equipment per company policy and procedures.


  • Willingness to travel and work internationally up to 50% of the time for customer reviews, sales support, installation, commissioning, testing, customer support or other duties as required.



  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics or similar
  • Registered professional engineer or eligible for P. Eng. registration

Required Training/Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of sub-sea / high reliability engineering or equivalent with direct experience in the design and development of electrical/electronic systems for remote and harsh environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in design, integration, qualification testing, troubleshooting and commissioning of high reliability systems.
  • Experience in project engineering, systems engineering, work breakdown structure and application of standard engineering practices to ensure conformance with functional specifications and project requirements.
  • Experience with AutoCAD for development of electrical schematics and block diagrams
  • Experience with Altium Designer for the development of schematics and printed circuit board assemblies is an asset
  • Experience with EMI/EMC and noise mitigation strategies is an asset
  • Experience with high voltage systems (both DC and AC) is an asset
  • Experience with communications protocols (eg. RS232, CAN, TCP/IP, etc.) is an asset
  • Experience with microcontrollers (eg. Atmel AVR) is an asset
  • Experience with battery systems (eg. Lead Acid and Lithium Polymer) is an asset

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of electrical/electronics design standards (e.g. IEEE, NEC, IEC, etc.).
  • Aptitude to lead small project teams.
  • Ability to multi-task on several concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute under pressure and tight timelines.
  • Fluency in English, spoken and written
  • Fluency in Mandarin language is desired
