The Oceans Learning Partnership (OLP) is a non-profit organization that brings together stakeholders in ocean education and ocean literacy to create exciting hands-on programs for K-12 students and the public. Through our boat-, shore- and lab-based programming, we seek to foster curiosity and understanding of our local coastal environment here in Newfoundland and Labrador, and to expose students to marine-related careers.

Oceans Learning Partnership is seeking to hire a dynamic, experienced, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and organized individual to join our collaborative and innovative team in St. John’s, NL, to help us meet this goal of sparking interest and understanding of the local coastal environment.

Position: Program Manager, Coastal Explorers Field School

Location: St. John’s, NL

Employment Status: 13-month, full-time position with possibility of extension (maternity leave position)

Anticipated Start Date : October 31, 2016

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, occasional evening/weekend work required

Overview of Position

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Manager is responsible for the development, planning, coordination of and evaluation of OLP’s suite of experiential field-based programs offered through the Coastal Explorers Field School. Consistent with OLP’s partnership model, the Program Manager works collaboratively with a team from OLP’s partner organizations and regional partners to develop programming for K-12 students and teachers. The Program Manager is responsible for outreach to education partners to ensure linkages with the provincial curriculum, program promotion, communications, training and supervision of field staff, budget planning and funding proposal writing.

Our educational programming is currently offered at four partner field sites in Holyrood, Terra Nova National Park (with Parks Canada), and at two Memorial University marine research centres: Ocean Sciences Centre in Logy Bay and Bonne Bay Marine Station in Norris Point. In addition, OLP is working with several regional partners to bring this type of experiential ocean education to several new regions of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and coordinate the Coastal Explorers Field School at four existing field sites, including operational planning, budget management, and management of equipment;

Lead planning and new program development for Coastal Explorers Field School;

Contribute to operational planning and new program development at the three new regional field sites as part of expansion efforts from 2016-2020;

Lead outreach/program promotion to schools and liaise with educational partners to ensure best fit with curriculum;

Interview, hire, train and supervise field staff;

Program delivery (school program, enrichment program in marine science and technology for high school students, teacher training);

Liaise and collaborate with Program Team members from partner organizations;

Contribute to funding efforts, including proposal writing;

Represent Oceans Learning Partnership at meetings, events, conferences, etc. and present about the Coastal Explorers Field School;

Contribute to communications and outreach (e.g. e-newsletter, social media, interviews).

Requirements

Degree in biological/environmental sciences, education, or similar (graduate degree and focus on ocean sciences preferred);

At least 2-5 years professional experience with experiential education, interpretation, and working with youth, or similar experience (please specify in Expression of Interest);

Proven experience as program or project manager with ability to train and supervise staff;

Outstanding collaborative and organizational skills;

Ability to develop, manage and implement program budgets;

Ability to work independently and as part of a large collaborative network;

Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines, and to communicate in professional and timely manner;

Strong communication skills; comfortable leading presentations, liaising with media, and contributing to organizational communications (newsletters, social media, etc.).
