Oceana Canada works with civil society, academics, fishermen, and government to return Canada’s formerly vibrant oceans to health. We engage in fact-based campaigns designed to preserve the bounty of the sea as a source for wild-caught fish, as well as to preserve the marine ecosystem for our own and future generations.
Oceana Canada seeks a Research Assistant to play a critical role in support of the success of its campaigns. The position, reporting to the Director of Science, will be responsible for providing research support for marine conservation campaign topics in fisheries science, oceans management and related policies.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Provide research support related to fisheries and marine conservation to inform and support the goals and strategies of Oceana Canada’s campaigns.
Assist with the preparation of research materials and logistic support for Oceana’s Science Symposium and Expedition.
Gather information through literature searches, government reports & communications and others sources, and synthesize for science and communication purposes.
Write, edit, and prepare reports & summary documents with meticulous attention to detail.
Perform additional duties as needed and assigned by the Science Director or Fisheries Scientist.
Must have the ability to handle many tasks simultaneously in a dynamic work environment with speed, accuracy, initiative and with a positive attitude.
Must maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information and possess excellent judgment in handling communications and representing Oceana Canada in a professional manner.
A University degree in a relevant discipline.
Excellent writing, editing, communication and research skills.
Knowledge of marine ecosystems and organisms.
Organized working style with attention to detail.
The successful candidate must be available for full-time work in Canada.
Proficiency in ArcGIS.
Knowledge of Canadian fisheries.
Knowledge of Canadian fishery policy and management.
