Under the direction of the Manager of Mental Health and Addiction Services or designate, the Community Health Worker (Nicotine Health Promotion, Outreach and Treatment) is responsible for the health promotion, outreach, early identification, intervention, dependency assessment, referral, supportive rehabilitative counselling and follow-up of clients of Addiction Services, related to tobacco use and nicotine addiction. The position assists the individual to adopt a healthier lifestyle by presenting appropriate options, alternatives and community resources.

This work will be conducted within a designated geographical area. This may include providing individual or group services at the worksite, schools and other related agencies and community locations. This position also functions in a consultative capacity and acts as a community resource in terms of pre-treatment contacts, informal assessments, pre-screening, and provision of information. The position also participates in the delivery of prevention and health promotion programs

The duties of the Community Health Worker (Nicotine Addiction Treatment will be carried out in accordance with the principles and practices that guide Nova Scotia Health Authority.


Grade 12 plus successful completion of a recognized College or University program (minimum one year full time, but two or more years preferred) providing intensive, supervised counselling skills training and focussed education on counselling-related issues, preferably specific to the field of addictions.
Demonstrated high degree of interpersonal effectiveness, good judgement, empathy, commitment to teamwork, and strong understanding and application of ethical principles.
Demonstrated knowledge of various treatment theories and approaches as well as an integrated level of knowledge and skills; effective application of the personal qualities, skills and techniques involved in the field of nicotine addiction and nicotine addiction-related programming. A good understanding of a community-based approach to service delivery. Ability to make sound decisions regarding client care and to work co-operatively with other professionals, para-professionals and lay person.
Must be a non-smoker.
Must be bilingual – English and French.
Knowledge of addiction and recovery processes, as well as an understanding of and flexibility in using diverse treatment approaches, including harm reduction.
Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.


Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, and maintain productivity and personal health.
Familiarity with the principles of prevention and health promotion.
5 years of successful abstinence-based recovery from nicotine addiction would be considered an asset.
Must have demonstrated good attendance in current and past employment.

Hours of work: Approximately 1 year

Salary: $25.4721 – $31.2276 hourly
