SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The registered nurse will provide consultation, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to clients with early psychosis in collaboration with the interdisciplinary mental health team. The registered nurse will utilize nursing skills and knowledge in application of psychiatric nursing theories and practices in accordance with the Ontario College of Nurses Standards of Practice. The Registered Nurse will engage a therapeutic partnership with clients, their families, and hospital and community resources.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct screened initial assessment interviews
  • Conducts interviews with family members to obtain pertinent history relevant to assessment and treatment of the client
  • Development of treatment agreements based on client goals, knowledge of psychiatric and psychosocial treatment modalities
  • Use of recovery and rehabilitation models in assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of client care and family centered interventions
  • Provide psycho-education to clients, families and community partners
  • Liaise and advocate between the client, family, other members of the treatment team and the larger treatment community
  • Provide crisis intervention and support
  • Provide care acknowledging the unique needs of the young adult clients and their families
  • Reinforce client and family strengths and adaptive coping strategies
  • Participate in team based and/or community based group planning, implementation, and evaluation as needed.
  • Develop and facilitate group programs for clients and family members as needed
  • Regular written and phone communication with client’s primary care practitioner and client’s family.
  • Attend team, administrative and relevant system-level meetings
  • Complete required documentation in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse

  • CAN Certification in psychiatric/mental health nursing, preferred
  • Current and demonstrated knowledge of unique developmental issues of young adult clients and their families
  • Current and demonstrated knowledge of psychotic illnesses including etiology, prognosis and treatment modalities,
  • Experience in mental health teaching to clients, family and community
  • Recent related clinical experience working with individuals with the a serious mental illness preferably in a community setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with individuals with Concurrent Disorders
  • Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation principals
  • Working knowledge of Mental Health Reform, Mental Health Act, privacy legislation
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing education courses in Mental health or related fields
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Valid driver’s license and insurance as incumbent will be required to drive their vehicle for the provision of mental health services.
  • Successful completion of a criminal reference review
  • Evidence of excellent communication, interpersonal and psychotherapeutic skills
  • CPR and First Aid Certification required
