HOURS AND REMUNERATION: Part-time permanent, 28 hours per week, Mon-Fri weekdays with some evenings and/or weekends. Remuneration based on skills and experience.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Editor will edit NISA’s literary journal Open Minds Quarterly (OMQ). This position is responsible for soliciting, receiving, editing, proofreading, and selecting appropriate submissions for each issue. The editor is the primary contact with authors and readers. The Editor will also support NISA members participating in The Writers’ Circle by providing editorial feedback and organizing or facilitating writing workshops at NISA.


  • Organize and assemble content for a quarterly publication, OMQ, that is reflective of its main purpose, goals and objectives.
  • Provide an editorial voice that promotes NISA’s mission, vision and values to the readership and to the community.
  • Make editorial decisions regarding content of OMQ.
  • Proofread and edit accepted submissions (poetry, first person accounts, essays, etc.) for OMQ.
  • Establish relationships and oversee volunteer section editors for OMQ.
  • Work with volunteers and members who assist with OMQ publication and its projects.
  • Cultivate a community of readers, contributors and subscribers through editorials, events, writing contests, workshops, social media and other avenues.
  • Represent with integrity, as editor, the voices and needs of people with lived experience of mental illness or mental health challenges.
  • Promote Open Minds Quarterly, NISA, The Writers’ Circle, and other NISA initiatives locally and in the larger community.
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of the contributors to OMQ.
  • Maintain files recording all submissions and correspondence.
  • Recruit member volunteers or community volunteers as needed.
  • Connect to community resources and agencies as needed.
  • Administer the annual BrainStorm Poetry Contest and coordinate judging.
  • Participate in fundraising activities.
  • Research various grant opportunities and write grant proposals and reports.


  • Lived experience within the mental health system.
  • Experience in editing, publishing or writing.
  • Experience organizing or facilitating workshops.
  • Experience providing writing or editorial support.
  • A diploma, degree or Canadian equivalent in English, Journalism or a related discipline is considered an asset. Equivalent knowledge and experience may be considered.
  • Computer experience, including an ability to use Word, Excel, Adobe Creative Suite and email/internet technologies is mandatory.
  • Office administration experience is preferred.
  • Experience in advocacy or social justice is an asset.
  • Familiar with the goals and objectives of NISA/Northern Initiative for Social Action is an asset.
  • Written and verbal proficiency in both official languages is preferred.
