Position Overview
Software Engineering practice is established to promote and implement tools and best practices in software engineering – code management, continuous integration, continuous delivery and automated testing to increase quality of software, improve efficiency and establish full automation of CI/CD pipeline across SDLC The focus of this position is to play a lead role in shaping IT’s capability, processes and technology to drive a significant increase in the level and quality of software engineering and CI/CD practices.To actively lead and facilitate the instigation, recommendation and shaping of the future development of the Application Development & Maintenance (AD&M) capability, processes and technology to drive a significant increase in the level and quality of software engineering practices. The role combines a deep technical capability in the area of software engineering and DevOps, with an opportunity to influence a wide spectrum of senior technical and business people to achieve our software quality ambitions.

  • Leading a small team of software and DevOps Engineers and drive the activity to embed software engineering practices and automation across AD&M teams
  • Transition of AD&M to the level of software delivery excellence required to enable our strategic targets for business responsiveness, quality and service.
  • Lead the implementation of tools to support engineering, automation and CI/CD practices (TDD, Unit Testing, GIT, Jenkins, SonarQube, Puppet)
  • Provide leadership, and drive activity to constantly maintain an appropriate set of technology platforms and software versions
  • Scope, define, document and lead transformational activities
  • Control of cost against budget
  • Apply skills and knowledge within and across multiple areas of AD&M to support success of change delivery
  • Explore and propose new technologies (Docker, Cloud) to improve the software delivery process
  • Influence, carry conviction and obtain commitment from all levels of staff / managers
  • Build and manage long term relationships with stakeholders
  • Apply conceptual thinking, research skills and strategic view to all aspects of the role

  • Required Qualifications, Knowledge, & Skills
  • Degree or relevant experience
  • Previous hands on experience in implementing Software Engineering tools and practices – SCM, Code Reviews, TDD, CI/CD, Test Automation
  • Extensive, and up-to-date, expertise with a of a wide range of technologies (Java, .Net, Linux, Windows) and software engineering practices
  • Recent, hands-on experience with programming and scripting languages
  • Experience designing configuration management systems using tools such as Chef, Ansible, Puppet, Salt, Jenkins, Bamboo etc.
  • A good grounding in both SQL and NoSQL databases
  • Overall IT experience. (7-10 years)
  • Previous experience or proactively leading both development and Architecture initiatives and teams
  • A proven history in the transformation of technical teams
  • A good understanding, and experience of, working effectively in Agile / XP development environment
  • Experience in digital technology or start up organizations
  • Mature approach to negotiating, influencing and handling conflict with executive level and below
  • A strong external knowledge network with experience of leveraging this for the benefit of

  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills
  • Financial acumen to support the construction of cost benefit cases; identification of benefit streams and their measurement
