The Niagara Region has a full-time, paid Waste Management Environmental/Geoscience Technician Co-op Student position available from May – August with the Waste Management Division of the Public Works Department. This is an excellent learning opportunity for a current student enrolled a co-op program in a Geoscience , Engineering, Chemical, Environmental or related field of study.
Location: Regional Headquarters at 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way in Thorold, ON (near Brock University) with some travel throughout the region for field assignments – a G-class license and access to a reliable vehicle is preferred
The Waste Management- Environmental/Geoscience Technician will perform a variety of tasks, including:
Research published articles, collect groundwater data from various locations and develop a conceptual model to evaluate the interactions between off- site property and the Landfill site.
Assist with work and coordination related projects such as requests for proposal, tendering, contract administration and gathering related information
Prepare applications for Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for amendments to existing ECA.
Inspect field work projects that contractors are following the requirements of the contract.
Review, organize and evaluate reports and data from consultants.
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalency (ex. GED)
Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary co-op program in Geoscience, Engineering, Chemical, Environmental (or a related field)
Must be able to start full-time work the beginning of May 2016 up to the end of August 2016
Valid driver’s license is required for travel throughout Niagara; a G-class license and access to a reliable vehicle is preferred
Other Knowledge, Experience and Skills
Project Management knowledge/experience
Knowledge of Waste Management is an asset
Knowledge of the MOECC – Environmental Compliance Approval process and environmental regulations would be beneficial
Ground water data collection, management and interpretation.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required
Strong organizational, coordination and research skills
Computer proficiency in Word, Excel
Experience with AutoCAD would be an asset
Familiarity with blueprints, site plans, and other technical drawings
Self-motivated with the ability to work with little supervision if needed
Ability to work in a team setting
Driver’s license required – a G-class license and access to a reliable vehicle is preferred
Must provide proof of successful completion of high school
Must provide proof in a co-op program enrollment in a related post-secondary program
Must provide own CSA-approved safety footwear
Must provide proof of valid driver’s license; a Driver’s Abstract may be required
Approximate Duration: May to August, 2016
This position is scheduled 35 hours per week, Tuesday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm
