New Star Capital is a seeking a full time Payroll Manager/Accountant to join its team of 4 accounting staff in its head office located in South Edmonton. This position is a maternity leave replacement, and the position will be held for a period of up to 12 months.
The Payroll Manager/Accountant will report directly to New Star’s controller.

The candidate must have exceptional organizational skills, strong attention to detail, effective communication skills and must be able to excel in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities will include, however are not limited to:

  • Responsible for all aspects of working with Ceridian software to process bi-monthly payroll for 150 employees, which consists of salary and hourly employees.
  • Entry of new employees, terminations, wage changes, etc. in payroll system.
  • Maintenance of various control sheets as well as personnel records.
  • Benefit administration, enrollment, terminations, and reconciliation.
  • Payroll related tasks including source deduction remittances and reconciliations, GL account reconciliations, and T4s.
  • Ongoing training and support to the managers of locations on payroll matters.
  • Posting of bi-weekly payroll journal entries and month-end payroll accruals.
  • Preparation of bank account reconciliations.
  • Post month-end journal entries and prepare monthly financial reports for management.
  • Other projects/duties as required.

Proficiencies and qualifications will include:

  • Must have previous payroll experience and completed payroll education, such as the Canadian Payroll Association’s PCP designation.
  • Experience with processing payroll in Ceridian or similar payroll system.
  • Knowledge of Employment Standards.
  • Full-cycle accounting experience. Degree or Diploma in Accounting is considered an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of general ledger entry functions and processes.
  • Experience with Sage 300 ERP (ACCPAC) considered an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
