New Brunswick Public Library Service (NBPLS) is searching for a creative and dynamic individual with demonstrated enthusiasm towards the mission of public libraries for the casual employment opportunity of Library Assistant at the Ross Memorial Library in St. Andrews. The library is part of the Fundy Library Region.

The Library Assistant actively participates in the planning, coordination and delivery of programs and services for children and adults; assists in promoting the library and its services; maintains positive relations with the community; oversees the day to day provision of circulation services; acts as a resource person and trainer for the automated library system; provides reader’s advisory and intermediate level reference service using traditional and electronic resources; orients and assists patrons in the use of information technology and information literacy; assists in delegating tasks and in assessing the work of volunteers, summer students and employment program personnel; ensures the day to day maintenance of the library facility; oversees the collection of library statistics; participates in committees; and assists with other library functions as required. The Library Assistant will also assist in the maintenance of collections by suggesting materials for purchase, shelving materials, and conducting shelf reading. This opportunity requires daytime, evening and weekend shifts (based on work schedules) Maintaining library collections will involve some lifting on occasion. Candidates should possess a high school diploma supplemented by one (1) year of post- secondary courses/training and three (3) years experience working with the public including one year of relevant experience delivering programs or services; OR completion of a formal library/information study program and two (2) years experience working with the public. Experience using e-mail, the Internet and MS-Word are essential. Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative and an ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Strong interpersonal, organizational and communications skills are essential. The successful candidate will be required to obtain a criminal record check for work with the vulnerable sector.
