New Brunswick Public Library Service (NBPLS) is searching for a creative and dynamic individual with
demonstrated enthusiasm towards the mission of public libraries for the casual opportunity of Library
Assistant – Children’s Services at the Saint John Free Public Library in Saint John.
As a member of the library team, the successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and presenting
programs for children and youth; carrying out daily opening and closing procedures for the children’s
services unit; assisting in decorating the children’s area and in preparing special exhibits; providing loan
service through an automated circulation system; providing reader’s advisory service; providing
intermediate level reference service using traditional and electronic resources; conducting library
orientation tours; delivering library outreach such as school visits and book deposits; assisting patrons in
the use of library equipment; orienting patrons in information technology and in information literacy;
promoting the library’s services for children; developing promotional materials; maintaining positive
relationships with the community; assisting in training, supervising and assessing the work performance of
students, volunteers and project employees as assigned; assisting in the development and evaluation of
services; keeping accurate statistics for the unit and conducting special projects as assigned. The Library
Assistant will also assist in the maintenance of collections, the shelving of materials and shelf reading.
This opportunity requires daytime, evening and weekend shifts (based on work schedules) Maintaining
library collections will involve some lifting on occasion.
Candidates must possess a high school diploma supplemented by one (1) year of relevant post-secondary
courses/training and three (3) years experience working with the public; OR completion of a formal
library/information study program and two (2) years experience working with the public. An equivalent
combination of training and experience may be considered.
Experience using e-mail, the Internet and MS-Word are essential. Written and spoken competence in
English and French is required.
The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative and an ability to work both independently and in a team
environment. Strong interpersonal, organizational and communications skills are essential.
