Overview
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for an energetic, motivated professional to join our team as Media Relations Manager, for Western Canada.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is Canada’s leading private land conservation organization, operating since 1962. A registered charity, we work with private land owners who wish to conserve their lands for today and future generations.

Reporting to the Director, National Media Relations, the successful candidate will deliver proactive media relations strategies and activities in Western Canada. In addition, the position will also provide occasional support to NCC’s government relations work in Western Canada.

The Media Relations Manager supports NCC Communications staff in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and works with National communications staff.

The goal is to help build strong relations with news media and help NCC to continue earning regular media coverage helping staff share our conservation projects, stories and successes with the broader public.

The Communications Manager ensures that regional communications activities conform to national standards and policies. These responsibilities are to be carried out within assigned Communications and project-related expense budgets.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Communications

  • Cultivate and enhance collaborative relationships with media;
  • Develop proactive media relations strategy to raise awareness of NCC in Western Canada;
  • Seek earned media opportunities to support positive expression of NCC brand;
  • Manage media inquiries and interview requests;
  • Develop pitches, news releases, media advisories, speeches, backgrounders, opinion editorials and commentaries and stories;
  • Secure strategic media placement;
  • Plan, manage and supervise media events;
  • Assist regional staff to enhance communications channels and media outreach;
  • Support government relations efforts (provincial and federal);
  • Support and contribute to digital communications channels including website, social media, and blog;
  • Monitor on going and emerging issues that may impact NCC brand, assist in crafting key messages;
  • Track all media statistics in cooperation with National staff;
  • Facilitate meetings and briefings with regional and federal government representative to support NCC projects and partnerships;
  • Represent NCC in a variety of external functions, (including public speaking, meetings, and media relations);
  • Perform as media spokesperson;
  • Promote NCC events and volunteer opportunities while working in conjunction with regional staff and partner organizations;
  • Ensure communications and materials are consistent with the national brand and image guidelines;
  • Contribute copy to nationally-produced NCC publications and multi-media intended for external circulation, such as the Annual Report, magazine and others;
  • Support regional staff in the promotion of a variety of public special events, including participation in trade and outdoor shows, property tours and small socials, to raise awareness of NCC in support of our activities.

2. Other Duties

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • University degree or college program in journalism, public relations, corporate communications or similar discipline;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in media and communications role, with focus on media relations;
  • Strong understanding of regional and local media;
  • Demonstrated ability to reach out to media and generate coverage;
  • Strong understanding of the structure of government (federal and provincial);
  • Experience working with elected officials an asset;
  • Superior writing and editing skills (ability to translate technical material for lay audience);
  • Proven leadership skills;
  • Exceptional donor/client communications skills;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills;
  • Experience in strategic communications planning and budget development and management;
  • Experience developing and executing successful marketing communications plans;
  • Exceptional event planning skills;
  • Self-motivated, with superior time management skills and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Highly analytical and detail oriented;
  • A creative, pro-active thinker;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, and a demonstrated ability to learn new software applications efficiently;
  • Commitment to the mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada
  • Flexible schedule;
  • Some travel required;
  • Bilingualism is considered an asset.
