The Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability is looking to hire a summer student to work full time for 4-6 months, casual work may be available after this period. Work hours will be Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30 pm (36.25 hours/week). The position will be located in south Edmonton in the Edmonton Research Park 9411A – 20TH Avenue until mid-July when the position will move to the PIC building on NAIT Campus. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to assist Senior Researchers in the implementation of technology development or verification and validation studies of oil sands related technologies, products or solutions.

The Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability is a 12,000-square-foot, state-of-the art research lab staffed by an expert team of applied scientists, engineers and technicians. We bridge the gap between existing oil sands environmental research and real-world solutions, taking innovative ideas from concept to commercialization. We work with business and industry to develop technologies that improve the economic and environmental performance of the oil sands industry. Students will help deliver research projects related to these real-world problems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a variety of laboratory based techniques such as:

    • Atterberg Limits,

    • Particle size analysis,

    • Lab vane testing,

  • Acquire and tabulate data using macros within Excel

  • Perform calculations on the tabulated data

  • Write reports/presentations summarizing the data obtained using Word and Power Point

  • Capable of clearly stating objectives for experiments and documenting observations

  • Some field related work may also be required – on site with operators or service companies


  • Must be a student of the Civil Engineering Technology or another related program area of study.

  • Must live or study in Alberta

  • Must be returning to school full time no later than November 1.

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or protected person under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and legally entitled to work and study in Canada.

  • Must have an interest in research and have familiarity with lab instrumentation, experimental design and the petro chemical industry.

  • Demonstrated comfort with computers and the use of Microsoft Office Applications

  • Demonstrated understanding of lab safety guidelines and best practices including WHIMS, and Occupational Health & Safety guidelines.

  • Must be willing to sign a mutual non-disclosure agreement

Remuneration: $17.24 per hour ($15.50 + 11.2% in lieu of benefits)
