Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, making MS Canada’s disease. The MS Society of Canada is the country’s leading MS advocate, funding leading research in MS and programs & services that help people live well with the disease.

Reporting to the Northern Regional Manager – Programs and Services, Edmonton and Capital Region Chapter, the Programs and Services Assistant will be responsible for planning and implementing the MS Kids Education Program and Summer Picnic programs. In addition, the Programs and Services Assistant will support the Edmonton and Capital Region Chapter’s Coordinators, Programs & Services, in covering the information, support, advocacy, and education programs; as well as other Programs & Services duties where assistance is needed. As an active team player, this position will provide support to the Edmonton & Capital Region Chapter and Alberta Division’s Fund Development team as required, including assisting with event preparation and implementation.

This position is a position of trust. The successful incumbent will be required to complete the screening process including completion of appropriate background checks in compliance with the National Screening Measures Policy as a condition of hire.

Responsibilities:

Programs and Services Support for Persons with MS and Youth (70%)

  • Plan and implement the Kids Education program for children aged 6-12, who have a parent or family member living with MS for the MS Walk, Summer Picnic, and Annual Christmas Party
  • Take a lead role in planning and implementing the Annual Summer Picnic
  • Take a lead role in planning the Annual Christmas Party
  • Provide face-to-face and telephone support and information to clients
  • Assist in promoting and marketing wellness programs in the community
  • Assist with the gathering information on community and government resources
  • Assist in providing advocacy support for individuals affected by MS
  • Assist in delivering MS education presentations and attending MS Awareness events for the Edmonton & Capital Region Chapter
  • Assist in planning for fall wellness, education and social programs
  • Assist in facilitating the summer Community Support Groups
  • Input into CS CRM Database
  • Maintain accurate records, including comprehensive budgets, of all activities

Fund Development Activity Support (30%)

  • Provide implementation support to the Alberta & NWT Division and Edmonton & Capital Region Chapter fund development teams with fundraising events (MS Walk, MS Bike, MS Golf, Burgers to Beat MS, etc.), including advance preparations & on-site representation as needed

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year of post-secondary education in recreation or health related disciplines with a minimum of one to two years’ experience in recreation/wellness programming, group facilitation and/or children’s programming in the non-profit sector or a related work place or business environment
  • Experience in working with persons with disabilities is an asset
  • Due to government funding, the Programs and Services Assistant must be returning full-time to post-secondary in the fall
  • A valid Class 5 Drivers’ License is required
  • Ability to plan and implement quality education and social events for children and adults
  • Ability to properly facilitate groups ranging from five to thirty individuals
  • Ability to deal sensitively and appropriately with a variety of people, both in person and on the telephone
  • Strong administrative skills and ability to multi-task
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to represent the MS Society in an appropriate manner
  • Physical demands of special events including packing, lifting carrying and loading

Special Considerations:

  • This position must meet the demands of clients, staff, volunteers and other MS Society members
  • Travel within the Edmonton and Capital Region is required
  • This position requires some evening and weekend work; flexible hours and overtime are to be discussed with the Northern Regional Manager
