What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
. conduct a variety of routine to complex tests for the identification and quantification of hazardous organic chemicals
. lead or participate in method development and method improvement activities
. operate, maintain and modify complex, automated analytical systems, including gas chromatography mass spectrometry systems
. represent the section in intra and inter branch scientific teams and projects

How do I qualify?

MANDATORY
You must have a scientific degree in chemistry.

Laboratory and Quality Assurance Knowledge:
. you have knowledge of laboratory procedures, standards and techniques
. you know scientific principles and practices applicable to test protocols, procedures, methods and analytical systems by selecting appropriate tests and equipment
. you know principles of instrumental analysis and associated relevant computer and electronics
. you know sources of analytical error, calibration, statistics and associated mathematics in order to apply scientific approaches to studies or research methods
. you know quality assurance/quality control principles and practices to create portions of the QA/QC systems and protocols
. you know and can apply statistics, experimental design and quality management principles to design and recommend or implement data management procedures.

Computer Knowledge and Skills:
. you know computer software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing applications and Laboratory Information Management systems (LIMS)
. you can use specialized instrument software to enter, retrieve, manipulate data and prepare draft reports on tests conducted
. you have computer programming skills to write and modify data manipulation programs for existing standard software

Reasoning, Evaluation and Analytical skills:
you can organize scientific findings in logical sequence for interpretation and application in support of environmental programs and policies
. you can prepare scientific evidence for judicial and quasi-judicial proceedings, including analytical methodologies and results of chemical analyses
. you can review analytical procedures, scientific results and study observations
. you can perform data verification and control procedures to ensure reliability of results
. you can develop scientific based solutions to solve environmental problems and attain objectives and goals.

Communication Skills:
. you can record data on test findings and testing methods used and describe the quality control measures in technical language for technical and lay persons
. you can explain detailed test findings to peers or to judicial proceedings, to discuss interdependent testing procedures and to respond to requests for tests.

Scientific Knowledge:
. you have demonstrated scientific knowledge in organic contaminant analysis to select appropriate techniques, evaluate results and to apply scientific approaches to assigned projects
. you have technical expertise and practical experience in gas chromatography and mass spectrometry as well as analytical procedures related to the preparation and analysis of environmental samples
. you know theories, principles and practices of organic, analytical and environmental chemistry
. you can interpret and apply legislation, such as the Safe Drinking Water Act, Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act, WHMIS and Material Safety Data Sheets
