If so, consider joining the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as a Meat Hygiene Officer where you will conduct food safety and regulatory compliance inspections at provincially licensed slaughter plants.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will be trained to:

  • conduct inspections of live animals including cattle, hogs, poultry, small ruminants and exotic species according to established procedures
  • oversee slaughter, ensuring animals are handled humanely, and conduct post-mortem inspections of carcasses according to established procedures
  • monitor plant activities and conduct daily assessments, ensuring that practices for safe food handling and disposal have been followed
  • review and assess compliance of operator’s records and systems
  • collect various samples for analysis
  • complete and maintain a variety of electronic records

How do I qualify?


  • You are able to travel extensively to areas where public transportation is not available.
  • You are able to perform physically demanding work duties in adverse conditions such as extreme heat or cold.

Knowledge and/or experience in the following disciplines:

  • food safety (e.g. good manufacturing processes, food processing, etc.)
  • conducting inspections to evaluate compliance with legislation/standards

Communication and interpersonal skills:

  • You have negotiation and conflict resolution skills to deal with difficult individuals and identify and diffuse potential conflicts.
  • You have oral communication skills to explain complex policies, procedures and techniques.
  • You have written communication skills to accurately document information.
  • You have interpersonal skills to build and sustain professional working relationships with clients.

Other important skills:

  • You are able to use keen observation skills to identify and assess issues and recommend an appropriate course of action.
  • You are able to work with minimal supervision and independently make sound decisions.
  • You are proficient with a variety of computer software applications such as e-mail, word processing and client-relationship databases.
