MetalBoss Technologies

Branch Edmonton AB CA

Mechanical / Industrial Designer
Edmonton, AB

University Degree in an engineering or design-related discipline (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or Architecture)….

The Mechanical/Industrial Designer applies the fields of Industrial Design, Design Engineering, and Architecture with a direct link to fabrication and manufacture. The Mechanical/Industrial Designer is responsible for the conception and translation of new product concepts into reality. A high degree of creativity, technical & materials knowledge, and dual focus on FORM and FUNCTION will be required for design of products ranging from high-end custom architectural installations to high-volume industrial products.

Interest in design as a process, enthusiasm for sustainability and innovation, attention to detail, and the ability to work within a team will be strong assets.

A six-month contract is offered with the goal that a high-performing individual will join the firm permanently.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Mechanical/Industrial Designer will report to the MetalBoss Technologies Inc. (MT) Head of Design & Technology and is responsible for capturing and understanding client design intent (from sketches, construction drawings, samples, or problem definition) and producing intelligent and manufacturable designs. The position is further responsible for complete communication and documentation of design requirements, changes, and deliverables with internal and external parties.

The Mechanical/Industrial Designer will spend the majority of their time designing products and will also interface with clients, prepare presentation materials, and aid in design and documentation process improvement. The Designer will provide hand sketches and utilize 3D CAD software (i.e., Solidworks) to model and prepare manufacture and install drawings. The Designer may at times receive support from Drafting Technologists, but will also be responsible for preparation of drawings and bills of materials for manufacture. The Designer may also be required to provide illustration (e.g., hand illustrations or Adobe Illustrator), 3D rendering, and input on aesthetic direction of products and presentation materials.

The position requires the combination of hands-on experience, knowledge, and occasional experimentation to ensure that constructability (both feasibility and efficiency) of any design matches its intended use.

Design is an important task where a high degree of accuracy is required. Errors result in delayed projects due to redrafting parts or components, wasted time and material, and potentially loss of credibility with the client resulting in a reduction or lost future work. The Lead Mechanical/Industrial Designer is therefore responsible for asking the appropriate questions at the start of any project and throughout the entire design and drafting process, instead of making assumptions. This is a critical task that should never be overlooked due to the possible negative consequences. Application of knowledge of production and site equipment capabilities and limitations is a critical component to ensuring accuracy, completeness, and realistic designs in this position.
