Organizational Summary:

The Medical Weight Management Centre provides a multidisciplinary, evidence-based, individualized, long-term approach to assess and treat people with obesity. Our team works together to improve the health and quality of lives of patients whose physical and/or psychological health is significantly impaired by their weight and where long-term weight management will play a central role in the reduction of cardio metabolic risk, the maintenance of mobility and of psychosocial well-being.

Job Summary:

The Student Obesity Medicine Assistant (OMA) is an integral part of the team that will participate in the treatment programs and patients’ lifestyle management (nutrition, activity and mental wellness) under the direction of the Medical Director, other clinic physicians and the health care team.

Job Description:

Support group medical visits:

The Student OMA will be required to support the physician, patients, and OMAs during group medical visits. This includes:

  • Enter patient online registrations into the Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
  • Group set up and take down
  • Photocopy handouts and help OMAs to prepare for groups
  • Greet patients, arrive and no show patients in EMR, and answer their questions
  • Print pre-filled patient progress check forms, triage them based on importance for the group physician, print prescriptions as needed for the physician to review, and communicate back with patients based on the physician’s response to the progress check forms
  • Enter any important medical updates/information into patients’ medical records following the group
  • Complete all encounter notes in EMR

Co-facilitate group medical visits:

The Student OMA will co-facilitate a few interactive and educational group medical visits either with an OMA or other Student OMAs. Depending on the type of group medical visit, groups may have from 40-80 individuals present. The Student OMA will be asked to create a new presentation and/or deliver an existing topic in which case the slides and speaker notes are already designed, but the student can revise as needed to the make the presentation their own. The student will present educational material on the session’s topic, facilitate discussions, prepare food samples, perform a food/cooking demo or help organize the group during hands-on activities, and lead a stretch break. Adequate training to facilitate the content will be provided but students should have skills in public speaking.

Patient Care:

The Student OMA will have the opportunity to shadow an OMA and observe how to write a detailed consultation letter for the physician to the patient’s family doctor. The student will also have the opportunity to observe and learn how a patient interview is conducted. The student will be trained in medical terminology and responsible for chart creation after a new patient visit. The student will be trained to perform tests on patients such as resting metabolic rate, enter survey scores into EMR, and scan and attach documents to EMR. The student will also communicate with our patients via emails and phone calls.

Term Project:

The Student OMA may be asked to create or revise some program material such as presentations, handouts, questionnaires and other forms. The student may also be asked to conduct a literature review and write a paper on a topic that is related to obesity management.

Other:

Required to strictly adhere to and observe all safety policies as outlined in the company policies and training sessions, as well as closely follow all instructions as outlined in the training sessions and manuals.

Requirements:

Technical

  • Must be working towards a BSc or BASc in Food, Nutrition & Health Program, Nutritional Science, Biomedical Physiology & Kinesiology or other health related field. Students who have already completed one co-op term, and are in their 3rd or 4th year are preferred.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Experience working with patients or in a medical setting is an asset
  • Good oral presentation skills and written communication skills
  • Ability to interpret scientific research
