Materials Science and Engineering involves the study and application of materials and their properties to enable technologies by controlling the structure through systematic synthesis and subsequent processing routes. McMaster University’s Department of Materials Science & Engineering has been consistently ranked among the best in the world, offering programming in the fields of Biomaterials, Functional Materials, Material Characterizations, Materials Performance, Nano Materials, and Structural Materials. In addition, the department houses four world-class research centres: the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, the McMaster Steel Research Centre and the Centre for Automotive Materials and Corrosion. The Department is also part of the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research and the McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute.
A vacancy exists within the department for an Administrator. This position is accountable for developing, implementing and maintaining the efficient operations of a complex department with multiple functions. This position provides administrative direction regarding the goals and objectives of the department of Materials Science & Engineering by examining, reviewing and assessing long-term as well as immediate needs. This position is responsible for building effective linkages and communicating with other units at the university. Other responsibilities include managing the financial, human and physical resources of the department in support of teaching and research in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures. Some evening & weekend work might be required.
Specific responsibilities include: representing the program at University-wide committees; overseeing department outreach initiatives; participating in University system development including admissions, course registration, degree audits etc.; preparing documentation for department reviews and reporting purposes, both internal and external; hiring, training and supervising department staff; administering sessional teaching contracts and payment; coordinating faculty hiring’s and negotiating payment with departments; managing undergraduate and graduate TA recruitment, assignment and payroll administration; complying with various employment contracts with respect to human resource functions (CUPE, Unifor, MUFA); managing, forecasting, monitoring and reporting on departmental budgets.
Qualified candidates will have excellent communication and collaboration skills; the ability to effectively manage resources; knowledge of University policies and procedures; demonstrated initiative and problem solving skills; proven supervisory experience, preferably in an academic environment; strong management and decision-making skills in order to provide leadership and manage human resource issues to create a positive work environment; the capacity to manage multiple priorities and delegate appropriately & effectively; demonstrated flexibility and adaptability within a changing environment; strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, faculty, staff and alumni; a high level of attention to detail and accuracy; strong negotiation skills; proven ability in the development of effective and efficient administrative systems; advanced knowledge of computer software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); strong budgeting and financial management experience with highly developed financial skills including the ability to interpret information and provide financial analysis; solid experience with university accounting applications (Mosaic, Hyperion); A University degree is required, accompanied by a minimum of 5 years of managerial experience in an academic environment.
