We have an immediate opening for a Vessel Superintendent based out of our St. John’s location. Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will be responsible for managing various vessels and cargo operations, securing, surveying of dock and shore facilities, and acting as an on-site liaison between customers. You will also manage annual dry-docking and annual maintenance plans. You will be instrumental in crew management; promoting harmonious crew relations and existing corporate culture. At McKeil Marine, we are growing fast by developing and implementing innovative marine solutions with a broad customer base in challenging geographic environments.

Key responsibilities:

  • Oversee day to day vessel operations including maintenance, vessel performance and crew performance;
  • Manage assigned vessels including certification, budget development and monitoring;
  • Provide ongoing feedback and formally review individual crew member performance on an annual basis;
  • Develop vessel dry docking schedule and winter refit programs;
  • Assist with investigating navigational accidents/incidents and eliminate identified deficiencies;
  • Oversee and direct loading/discharging of all cargos to maximum/allowed limits in a safe and secure manner as outlined by loading plans;
  • Oversee stowage of cargo and dunnage and lashing requirements of customer;
  • Act as the key liaison for the company with stevedores;
  • Ensure compliance with Quality and Safety Management System on-shore and on-board the vessel;
  • Act as a liaison with Captain and shore personnel to provide adequate resource and shore based support;
  • Ensure compliance with all port regulations;
  • Ensure customer satisfaction of cargo handling;
  • Provide technical support to Business Development department;
  • Ensure safety and pollution prevention measures are maintained.


  • Minimum 5 years ship board experience as an Engineering or Deck Officer;
  • Strong understanding and practical experience with Safety Management Systems and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code;
  • Strong computer skills and experience using MS Office and preventative maintenance systems;
  • Strong leadership and customer service skills;
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
