Here’s what you get to doUnder the direction of the Manager, Traffic Engineering and Operations, the successful candidate will manage the resources of the Traffic Signals, Traffic Systems and Street Lighting Units to ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of traffic signals and street lighting within the City of Mississauga. The position is responsible for the following: Developing standards and procedures to ensure safe traffic signal and street lighting operations, researching and preparing related reports, and making recommendations in compliance with the Highway Traffic Act and applicable by-laws.
Coordinating and supervising technical staff functions, establishing priorities for work schedules including assignment of major projects. Project management of traffic signals and systems, communications and other relevant supporting systems. Making recommendations regarding budget needs, including both capital and current programs. Ensuring that purchases of equipment and services are within budget and in accordance with City policies and guidelines.
Attending public meetings and committee meetings as required. Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, including elected officials, in regards to traffic signal and street lighting matters. Liaising with the City’s street lighting service provider to ensure efficient and cost effective operation and maintenance of the street lighting. Liaising with the Region of Peel, the Ministry of Transportation Ontario and bordering jurisdictions to ensure a seamless and cost effective traffic signal operation is maintained.Attending hearings of discovery and court litigation, and providing evidence as a subject matter expert as required.
Preparing and reviewing traffic signal design drawings, including legal drawings. Performing other related duties as assigned. What you need to bring to this job Post-secondary degree or diploma in Traffic Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.A registered member in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) is strongly preferred. A minimum of 10 years’ experience in municipal Traffic Engineering practices involving Traffic Signals/Systems and Street Lighting.
A minimum of 3 years’ experience in effectively leading and managing staff. Strong working knowledge of Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS), including Traffic Signal Control Systems, Communication Systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Thorough knowledge of applicable Acts, By-laws, regulations and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, International Municipal Signal Association standards, etc. Strong strategic business planning and budgetary skills balanced with a pragmatic, results-oriented approach.
Demonstrated ability in dealing with senior management, the public, and elected officials on sensitive/political issues. Solid interpersonal skills to deal with internal and external stakeholders, government agencies, contractors and consultants. Strong project management skills to manage multiple projects, work programs and external contracts. Strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, report writing and presentation abilities. Computer proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office and relevant software applications. A valid Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license and availability of personal vehicle.
