The Art Exhibit Coordinator reports to the Arts & Culture Manager. This position will acquire, care for, develop, display and interpret a collection of artifacts or works of art in order to inform educate and entertain the public. The Art Exhibit Coordinator will act as the main Curator for all Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) Art Galleries, including the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by the Kirschener Family Corporation. The Art Exhibit Coordinator builds relationships with both internal and external partners, local artists, and be involved in designing aspects of the visitor experience. They will construct innovative and creative exhibitions that appeal to a wide cross –section of the general public.

Rate of Pay: 33.76/hour ($1 less/hour while on probation)

Responsibilities:
Plan, organize, interpret, and present art exhibitions
Preplan exhibit layout and assemble pieces of art to be displayed as part of the exhibit
Develop and coordinate an arts acquisition policy
Collection of art documentation and management
Cataloguing acquisitions and keeping records of all art exhibits
Researching and writing catalogues
Assist Advancement department with writing materials and articles for the arts and culture component of the corporate website as well as for internal and external publications
Negotiate art work loan items, external loans and the accompanying funding
Handle inquiries from researchers and the public
Assist in providing advice of new opportunities and projects
Responsible for creating design solutions that have a high visual impact enhancing visitor’s experience and interaction
Designs are required for a wide variety of products and activities, such as websites, advertising, catalogues, magazines, posters, product packaging, exhibitions and displays.
Dealing with inquiries from clients and stakeholders
Liaising with the Regional Municipality, voluntary groups, various organizations, the community and industry ( including schools, local history and other community groups) as well as grant agencies to secure sponsorship for events, publications and development projects
Builds and maintains positive relationships with artists, guest curators and local arts council
Ensures a high level of quality and professionalism in the presentation of all temporary exhibitions and interpretive materials
Networking with other museum and art gallery professionals and outside agencies
Complete additional projects as assigned by the Arts & Culture Manager.

Qualifications:
Education :
Post-Secondary degree or diploma in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Visual Arts or Digital Media.

Essential Skills and Experience:
Minimum 3 years experience in visual arts exhibits, digital media and related field
Creative thinking to produce new ideas and concepts;
Presenting finalized ideas and concepts to clients
Working with a wide range of media, including photography and computer-aided design
Proofreading to produce accurate and high-quality work;
Strong experience in design programs such as InDesign, QuarkXPress, FreeHand, Illustrator, Photoshop, 3ds ax, Acrobat, Director, Dreamweaver and Flash;
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills
Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity
Attention to detail, strong organizational, research and planning skills
Strong financial management and administrative skills
Ability to coordinate and work with volunteers

Desirable Skills and Experience:
Project management experience including monitoring budgets, developing contracts; tracking timelines; problem-solving
Experience working with a non-profit organization, artist-run centre, gallery, museum or media arts organization
Writing and publication experience an asset including some experience in writing grant applications
Proven curatorial and/or programming experience
Experience in art galleries and exhibit designs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS &WORKING CONDITIONS :
This is a part-time position requiring approximately 20 hours of work per week and requires a flexible schedule including early mornings, late nights, and weekend work.
This position may include heavy lifting of supplies and equipment and may be exposed to loud noises and will require an individual to be able to concentrate in a busy environment.
This position will also require a security clearance
This position may require travel between our various facilities within the Wood Buffalo Region. Access to reliable transportation is necessary.
