POSITION: OUTREACH WORKER(Homeless Outreach Program) 1 Temporary Full Time – SURREY ( Position is temporary until incumbent returns)

SALARY: $* *21.13 per hour (as per the Collective Agreement).

PROBATIONARY/TRIAL PERIOD: Shall be 3 months/488 hours in length with reviews held at the mid and end-point of the Period. Conditional on satisfactory service, the employee shall be confirmed in the position until the term ends. Unsatisfactory reviews shall end the employment.

HOURS AND DAYS OF WORK: Will work Monday to Friday . Shift times will be 06:00 – 14:00 hrs . Shifts are 7.5 hours in length. Days of rest shall be consecutive. Schedule may change with two weeks’ notice.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Outreach Program assists the absolute homeless (including drop in/shelter users) or prevents people from becoming absolute homeless by finding and accessing housing and appropriate services, assisting in both the establishment of a stable living environment and the development of supportive relationships in the community, including with service providers/business. These individuals may have a variety of challenging and often overlapping problems including serious mental illness, substance abuse (including IV drug use), hygiene issues, treatment (medical, psychiatric and rehab), and increasingly HIV+/Aids. Outreach Workers provide the necessary support and resources to address each individual’s issues and to reduce the risks of both future homelessness and their lifestyle choices. The worker will foster healthy attitudes and practices in such areas as housing, nutrition, treatment (including psychiatric, medical and/or rehab) and will, where no other service exists, assist the person build social and life skills that will enhance their quality of life. A few individuals may be maintained on a caseload.

JOB DUTIES: As posted – in brief to provide assistance, support and skill training to adult men and women to establish and maintain stable living situation, as independent as possible. Will discuss, isolate and assess problems, develop a flexible plan of action, ensure basic needs are met, network clientele with needed services, provide crisis intervention as necessary, administer finances and medications or arrange coverage of same; complete required paper work, maintain statistical data; aid in the training/upgrading placement programs for staff, volunteers and students.

QUALIFICATIONS: Related diploma or minimum Grade 12 education and two years related work experience; preference of a minimum of one year of case management experience or equivalent. Good familiarity with related resources. Suitability to work with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a less structured or isolated environment, strong ability to manage stress. Must have current OFA 1 First Aid Certificate ; Crisis Intervention Skills Training an asset. Must have a current Class Four driver’s licence. Excellent oral and written communication skills; Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to quickly learn job responsibilities and duties. Must have the physical/mental ability to perform the job; must be able to operate job related equipment. Must have ability to understand and maintain clientele/ worker boundaries. Must have ability to provide work direction. Must have a strong ability to relate to people in working relationships and in clientele communication. The job functions require a high degree of confidentiality and concentrated mental and written attention. External work will occur. The job duties are complex and may have a few disagreeable factors. Use of an automobile may at times be useful. A minimum of two years sobriety is required if substance misuse a past problem. This position is team oriented.
