POSITION: JANITOR/MAINTENANCE WORKER – 1 Full-time – Walton Residence

SALARY: $17.17 per hour to start. Positions are covered by the Health Community Sector Collective
Agreement (BCGEU).

PROBATIONARY/TRIAL PERIOD: Shall be 3 months/488 hours in length with reviews held at the mid and end point of the Period. Conditional on satisfactory service, the employee shall be confirmed permanent. Unsatisfactory reviews shall end the employment.

HOURS AND DAYS OF WORK: Position will work Tuesday through Saturday. Shift times will be 08:00 to 16:00 hrs. Tuesday through Thursday and from 23:00 to 07:00 hrs. Friday and Saturday. Days of rest shall be consecutive. Shifts are 7.25 hours in length. Schedule may change with two weeks notice.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Working within a shelter, Janitor/Maintenance workers ensure the cleanliness of the building both inside and out; ensure building functions (e.g. mechanical, plumbing, electrical) are maintained properly by doing regular maintenance and repairs; testing equipment regularly, maintaining supplies/tools for cleaning, operations (i.e. batteries, bulbs), garbage removal, and generally doing any other custodial or maintenance work to keep up the premises.

JOB DUTIES: As posted – in brief – will sweep, wash, wax flooring, clean and disinfect all surfaces, remove garbage, empty recycling containers, change filters, monitor building equipment, fix repairs to walls, plumbing, windows, maintain landscaping, etc. as needed. Will assist inexperienced staff, oversee volunteers and work with other staff to ensure facilities meet the needs of the clientele. The job involves working both within and, to a limited extent, outside the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Grade 12 education, minimum two years experience in the janitorial/maintenance field, training preferred; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Demonstrated proof of a minimum of two years sobriety if substance misuse a problem. Must have ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must have ability to provide work direction. Must have a strong ability to relate well to people; must understand and maintain clientele/worker boundaries. Must be suitable to work with disadvantaged and challenging individuals; Must have a strong ability to manage stress. Must be able to quickly learn job responsibilities and duties. Must have ability to work independently. Must have and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate, Crisis Intervention Skills Training an asset. Must have the physical/mental ability to perform the job, must be able to operate job related equipment. Must provide a record of a recent Criminal History check. Use of an automobile may at times be useful.
