POSITION: EDUCATION CONSULTANT SPECIAL EDUCATION – SECOND LANGUAGE

DURATION: NOVEMBER 2017 TO JUNE 2018

Kativik Ilisarniliriniq is a school board offering educational services in the 14 communities of Nunavik. The Montreal administrative center should eventually move to Nunavik.

FUNCTION:

Under the assistant Director of Complementary Services, the second language special education counsellor will work in close collaboration with the Inuit special education counsellors in all areas of special education.

IN GENERAL, THIS POSITION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Assessment and diagnosis of students with suspected learning problems in the schools.
  • Identification of students with emotional and/or behaviour problems
  • Working with school personnel in order to develop programs to help identified students, including the profoundly handicapped
  • The writing of individual reports describing the evaluation of a given student and recommendations
  • Organization of services for profoundly handicapped students
  • Consultation about and approval of the allocation of special education technicians, attendants and behaviour technicians
  • Support to Kativik Ilisarniliriniq students with special needs who are in the south.
  • Communicating with Health Services and Social Services when necessary concerning individual students.
  • Training and support for the special education teachers in each school
  • Organization of training and support for behaviour technicians, special education technicians and attendants
  • Teacher training of Inuit teachers and where possible, other school board staff concerning special education and child development
  • Pre-Kindergarten screening/evaluation of 4-year olds where appropriate (including Kindergarten derogation)
  • On-going development of culturally appropriate diagnostic tools and remedial material
  • Organization of trips and services required by Kativik Ilisarniliriniq in the area of special education outreach

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in special education.

The Board may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the afore-mentioned qualifications if it finds a suitable candidate who is a beneficiary of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement (JBNQA) and who accepts, as a condition of employment, to follow a training plan determined by the Board.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least five (5) years of teaching experience with children with special needs.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Knowledge of assessment tools in English
  • Able to travel extensively

CLASSIFICATION / SALARY / BENEFITS:

In accordance with the SPPOM collective agreement for professionals: from $40 241 to $76 293 annually depending on qualification and experience.
