Intermediate Architectural Designer

K H Davis is looking for an Intermediate Level Architectural Designer (Architect, Engineer, or Architectural technologist) who can bring significant home design and home renovation experience to our architectural department. The candidate should have a degree or diploma in Architecture, Architectural Technology, or Construction Technology from a Canadian college or university. The candidate would report directly to our Manager of Architectural Technology Services and our Chief Structural Engineer who oversee all of the design related project for Houses and Small Buildings done by our firm. This is NOT an entry level position.

We are a small but growing Engineering and Architectural firm of 9, located in the City of Toronto. Our projects are varied and extensive – they typically involve additions/renovations to existing homes and the design of completely new infill homes. Many of our architectural projects require the involvement of our Structural Engineers since significant structural changes are often a large part of our projects. Hence, this position is for an individual who is familiar with home construction and renovations and must understand very well how houses are built in Canada – this includes a very good understanding of wood framing, some understanding of home heating systems, appreciates the importance of proper building envelope design, and understands how municipal zoning by-laws and conservation authorities affect the design and development process.

Our projects vary tremendously in complexity and level of detail, but we are looking for an individual who is confident in their abilities and possesses strong client and customer service skills, relevant CAD skills such as AutoCAD and Revit, and experience preparing drawings for Municipal Zoning applications. A good working knowledge of Part 9 of the OBC is expected.

A secondary part of this position involves developing our company CAD standards for both Structural and Architectural, and advancing the use of BIM modelling and design within our firm.

Ideally, the candidate has at least 5 years of relevant experience and is a self starter – your role would be Project Manager since most of our small projects are done directly by the individuals to whom a project is assigned – hence, our PM’s work directly and fairly independently with our clients and senior staff usually only provide technical and process related support to our PM’s on an as-needed basis.

If you are an architect or architectural technologist who is looking to move up in terms of design responsibility and autonomy, then we may be the firm for you. We offer a very flexible work environment, benefits, and above-average annual bonus based upon year end profitability.

We focus on individual responsibility to our clients and their projects – our office is a truly collaborative environment where we encourage (require) people to assume responsibility, while at the same time, we provide our people with excellent technical support (from senior staff) to ensure that projects are delivered with high quality in a timely manner.
