IMPORTANT: This is a fulltime, Specific Project. Effective immediately until June 30, 2018.

JOB SUMMARY: UNDER THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE HEALTH & SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER, THE H&S TECHNICIAN WILL IDENTIFY OPERATIONAL, PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT MAY CAUSE OR CONTRIBUTE TO INCIDENTS, ACCIDENTS OR INJURY TO STAFF, STUDENTS AND VISITORS; TO GUIDE AND INFORM THE H&S COMMITTEE AND VARIOUS COLLEGE DEPARTMENTS OF APPROPRIATE CORRECTIONS REQUIRED AND THE APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOURS SO AS TO ENSURE A HEALTHY AND SAFE WORKPLACE.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Identifies and evaluates risks and carries out risk assessments associated with the physical, chemical and biological hazards in the workplace and recommend changes/mitigation strategies to control or eliminate these hazards
• Aids in establishing, implementing and enforcing internal H&S policies and procedures
• Aids in maintaining and updating H&S related databases (i.e. chemical safety)
• Provides support to the management teams, project teams, employees and contractors in the area of H&S and the environment
• Responds to employee questions and concerns
• Inspects the workplace for safety and health hazards including but not limited to means of egress, emergency exits, work sites, and provides feedback to supervisor
• Inspects safety equipment and keeps registers/logs/reports up to date and makes recommendations for maintenance, repairs and/or replacement as necessary
• Investigates workplace accidents or illnesses with management
• Develops and implements safety statistics reporting
• Aids in identifying health and safety needs with regard to training, programs and procedures and takes steps to ensure compliance with legislation
• Keeps up to date with new legislation and maintains a working knowledge of any developments that could affect the college
• Leads in-house training with managers and employees regarding health and safety issues and risks
• Documents and reports on findings for improvement purposes
• Aids in the update and implementation and continued support of the college “Emergency Measures Protocol”, including responding to H&S emergencies as needed.
• Aids in the disposal process for hazardous substances (e-waste, chemicals, biological, etc.)
• Participates in the H&S committee meetings
• Prepares announcements and newsletters as necessary
• Produces safety signage as necessary
• Advises on a range of specialist areas such as fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise levels, safeguarding machinery, and occupational diseases.
• Assists in escorting and informing service companies during safety equipment inspections
• Other related tasks as assigned

Qualifications
EDUCATION: College diploma (DEC) in Occupational Health + Safety or equivalent, as recognized by the competent authority

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
• Three to Five years of relevant experience in a large organization preferred
• Strong written, presentation and verbal communication skills
• Working knowledge of health and safety legislation and recognized industry standards
• Proven ability to work autonomously – (i.e. with minimal supervision)
• Excellent follow-through and follow-up skills
• Excellent negotiation skills
• VEGA software an asset
• Ability to organize work efficiently, multi-task and produce work under pressure
• Superior initiative, interpersonal skills, diplomacy, patience and discretion
• Ability to understand and analyze complex information and present it simply and accurately
• English – advanced oral and written
• French – Intermediate oral and written, advanced comprehension.
• Word, Excel and Power Point – intermediate level
• up – to date WHMIS training preferred

Testing may be required to demonstrate knowledge of:
• English – advanced oral and written
