Program Assistant
Durham Youth Housing and Support Services was created to fill a need for shelter for homeless youth in the Durham Region. The scope of our efforts reaches out to homeless youth, ages 16-24, in Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby.

The 13 bed shelter (Joanne’s House) is located in Ajax and offers services to youth including: shelter, drop-in, meals, clothing, food cupboard, shower and washroom facilities, assistance obtaining benefits, advocacy negotiating the social service system, access to telephone and internet and referrals to other services and service providers who can best address their needs. Durham Youth Housing and Support Services is a registered charitable organization and we are seeking two permanent part time Youth Advocates who support our Vision and Mission and who want to be part of an amazing organization providing committed 24-hour support to Durham’s at-risk and homeless youth.

Responsibilities:

  • The Program Assistant will provide professional support to the Youth Advocate’s and Shelter Manager in welcoming, accepting, and assisting the youth that stay at the shelter and access our services. Specific responsibilities of the Program Assistant will be to aid the Youth Advocate’s with: intake, case management, advocacy and referral, crisis intervention, reporting and documentation, facility management, meal preparation and addressing infractions of program rules. The Program Assistant will be responsible for attendance at staff meetings and trainings.

Qualifications:

  • Must be working towards or have education in the following areas: Child and Youth Worker Diploma, Social Service Worker diploma or related degree such as a B.S.W and knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and needs of the youth
  • Demonstrated skills, experience and passion working with at risk, marginalized or street involved youth
  • Ability to provide crisis intervention and exercise good judgment in emergency and/or crisis situations
  • Ability to demonstrate awareness of diversity and cultural sensitivity
  • Awareness and comfort level working with youth from the LGBTTTIQQ community
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for all potentialities within a residential setting
  • Excellent interpersonal as well as written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong belief in a harm reduction philosophy
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position.
  • Proven good attendance record with the capability of maintaining this same standard.
  • Ability to acquire Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance.

Duration:
This position is for 10 weeks starting immediately and will require some flexibility in shifts (evenings, and weekends)

Required experience:
