THE ROLE – NCSO
Irwin’s Safety is currently recruiting for a local National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) in Peace River , AB . Working safely in a team environment the NCSO will comply with all regulatory and company safety and operational policies and procedures and is responsible for keeping the construction site safe and foster the health and safety culture at all levels.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Regularly monitor safety compliance of workers and subcontractors; conduct site inspections and institute remedial action if required.
  • Attend and/or lead daily tool box talks and address crew on relative HSE matters.
  • Observe site conditions and make suggestions on continual improvement.
  • Review safety documents for compliance and ensure appropriate measures are established and utilized to encourage and facilitate injury and illness prevention.
  • Promote a culture of job site safety, where safety is everyone’s responsibility and provide coaching as needed and recommend corrective action when appropriate.
  • Review, file, and report all incidents and their documentation to the Management and follow up on and track corrective actions stemming from incident investigations, audits, inspections and hazard reports.
  • Keep management current on the status of any issue(s) that may impact on the work being performed.
  • Ensure maintenance of material safety data sheets (MSDS) so they are accessible to all employees.
  • Review and advising on OHS forms (hazard assessments, incident investigations).
  • Provide advice relating to compliance with Provincial/Federal OHS legislation.

OTHER POSSIBLE DUTIES

  • Conduct site specific health and safety orientations for all new site workers and visitors.
  • Record, file and update crew training and certifications.
  • Ensure employees and subcontractors wear appropriate PPE and comply with safety requirements.
  • Prepare site safety plans, conduct hazard assessments, incident investigations and risk assessments, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • Qualified as any of the following:

National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) Construction Safety Coordinator (Gold Seal) Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC)

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a safety/construction officer in Commercial or Industrial environment.
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency with Excel and Word.
  • Superior interpersonal abilities and ability to get along with diverse personalities, tactful, mature, and flexible.
  • Strong communication and training skills including the able to speak in front of large groups.
  • Good note taking and documentation skills.
  • Good knowledge of provincial (Alberta) regulations, policies, guidelines and standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to influence others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Walk; climb stairs and ladders; work under, in and above manufactured buildings and other structures; and otherwise move through congested, uneven and/or dusty indoor and outdoor construction areas.
  • Spend up to 90% of time in construction areas.

  • Contractors are welcome to apply for this position and rates may be negotiated based on a percentage of revenue, provided the contractor meets certain requirements (COI, WCB, security clearance, etc.)
