Job Description

The Product Regulations team has an opening for a Product Specialist who will be responsible to research, develop, and implement internal product standards, programs, and projects to ensure Irving Oil’s compliance with all applicable external regional and industry regulations and fit for use requirements through commercial and consumer activities.

This role supports all products in a geographical area (i.e. Canada, US, Europe) including blend components, additives, and finished products across the supply chain, up to and including the end consumer.

The Product Specialist is responsible to research, lead, and influence the development of external regulations and standards through attendance at industry association events and meetings. They act as the representative of Irving Oil at these conferences and as subject matter experts who challenge, influence, and introduce new ideas. In addition, they are responsible for interacting with and providing input to government regulatory bodies.


  • Influence, research, investigate, develop, lead, and maintain product requirements including standards, specifications, test requirements, product release and acceptance criteria applicable at each point in the supply chain. These will be in line with internal and industry best practices to ensure regulated, industry, commercial and internal product objectives are adhered to.
  • Effectively plan and lead tactical and strategic changes to product standards aligned with industry and supply chain activities. This includes leveraging peer relationships, active industry involvement (i.e. Canadian General Standards Board), and collaborating with commercial, scientific, engineering, marketing, or other associations.
  • Collaborate with environment regulatory specialists and government relations to review proposed regulatory changes and assess potential impacts to the company. Provide support to appropriate internal groups in cases where industry feedback or lobbying is required.
  • Internal compliance liaison with other compliance teams (i.e. tax, customs) as they relate to the movement of petroleum and renewable fuels by the company.
  • Research, develop and assist in facilitating communication, information, and training sessions to internal stakeholders.
  • Provide recommendations and be a critical thinking partner with team members to interpret applicable regulations, contracts, and industry standards to assess the impacts on new business opportunities and/or assess the change to existing people, processes and supporting technology.
  • Provide technical advice, troubleshooting, and solution regarding product and the associated programs.
  • Work with Product Partners to help identify product risks, trends and activities and lead others to complete required actions.
  • Participate in on-call schedules to provide after hours support to the business for PQQC.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in science field, technical operations or chemical engineering preferred .
  • Strong computer software knowledge/capabilities.
  • Certificates in quality assurance/risk management programming/project management an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years experience with petroleum products, handling, sampling, and testing is required.

  • Experience in a quality, operations, engineering or supply chain function.

  • Experience with project management, process improvements, and quality management systems, with a demonstrated knowledge of ISO-9000.


  • Excellent leadership skills, including collaboration and ability to identify and drive continuous improvement.

  • The candidate must also possess a high degree of problem solving ability (performance of root cause analysis) and have demonstrated ability to manage multiple priority projects/workload, ensuring timely completion.

  • Strong ability to influence without authority.
  • Concise and logical approach.
  • Well versed in risk management and quality assurance best practices and able to provide thoughtful and relevant advice on tactics.
