Job Summary:

This role is a one year contract covering a maternity leave for our Edmonton PVC plant.

The primary role of this position is maintenance and continuous improvement of the IPEX HSE Management System. This system consists of a number of Elements including but not limited to Management responsibility, Maintenance of equipment, Safety procedures for control of energy, WHIMS, Employee training plans, Management training plans, WSIB and worker’s compensation claims management.

This is a hands-on position and the incumbent will be expected to develop many different types of documents, procedures, rules, work instructions etc. The person is expected to be regularly on the plant floor for safety observations, assist the supervisors, identify hazardous tasks, assist in developing safe work practice, etc. It is expected that the person taking on this role will, with the support of IPEX, gain the knowledge required to fulfill the requirements of the position.

Principle Accountabilities

  • Maintain and create IPEX HSE Management System documents including but not limited to policies and procedures, work instructions, training plans and information postings specific to the London location.
  • Complete environmental reports as required by Corporate HSE Department.
  • Assist Supervisors and Managers with the application of the HSE system requirements.
  • Manage the worker’s compensation and return to work programs. Provide documents and direction to supervisors and managers regarding claims management. Maintain chronology for each case.
  • Prepare Safety talks and training materials for all departments on the frequency required by the department. For example: Maintenance safety talks prepared for monthly meetings, Production safety talks are bi-weekly etc. Maintain records of these meetings.
  • Prepare presentations and training materials for employee meetings and maintain records.
  • Maintain the schedule for planned inspections (PCE Tours). Co-ordinate documentation of planned inspections and maintain documents.
  • Participate in JHSC meetings; maintain minutes, action items and any other related documents.
  • Prepare monthly report on HSE system status, First Aids, Accident/Incidents JHSC activities.
  • Perform review and update of all Accident/Incident investigations following the supervisors’ initial investigation. Maintain action item list, file investigations, complete and submit forms to WSIB, maintain and submit monthly accident statistics.
  • Monitor use of Hazard reporting systems
  • Monitor use of hot work program.
  • Maintain Energy control system.
  • Maintain working at heights inventory.
  • Maintain First Aid Training records and schedules. Maintain First Aid kits and records of first aids.
  • Maintain training matrix and employee training records related to ISMS
  • Maintain MSDS books and Hazardous material inventory
  • Maintain required postings.
  • Co-ordinate Fire Drills and evaluate effectiveness
  • Maintain contractor lists and qualification.
  • Participate in Internal audits
  • Participate in new hire orientations
  • Backup to conduct Legionella element pH and Bacteria weekly testing. Record testing results in pH and Bacteria tracking file.
  • Balance time between time in plant and related environments (40%) requiring varying degrees of moderate physical labour.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Community College Diploma minimum
  • Recognized formal training in one of: Health and Safety, Human Resources, or Environmental studies.
  • Minimum 3 years of Health and Safety experience in a unionized manufacturing environment, preferably in the plastic industry
  • Must be adaptable and able to gain knowledge required to perform functions in a professional manner.
  • Strong communication skills – experience in training, giving presentations and writing reports.
  • Strong computer skills and technical aptitude.
  • Must understand, respect and adhere to workplace health, safety and environment rules and regulations.
  • Strong relationship building and management skills
