THE OPPORTUNITY

The Manager, Health Promotion is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion initiatives to achieve provincial advocacy objectives and ensuring they are aligned with the Heart & Stroke Mission objectives. The Manager also plays a critical role in identifying, developing and fostering partnerships to drive progress toward the Foundation’s mission and impact goals. The Manager is responsible for day-to-day management of the Health Promotion Coordinators and assists the Director in the administration and leadership of the Mission department.

KEY DELIVERABLES

Networking, Partnerships and Advocacy

Identify and develop partnerships to move HSF advocacy priorities in Nova Scotia forward and collaborate at a programmatic level to achieve impact goal. This includes partners from municipal and provincial government staff, regional health authorities, provincial coalitions, schools and school administrators, not-for-profit organizations, and First Nations community organizations

Review partnership proposals and ensure they are aligned with the Foundation’s mission

Work in tandem with internal stakeholders to address short-term and long-term needs that enable the success of health promotion initiatives

Collaborate with other HSF departments to increase HSF profile and programs in communities

Health Promotion

Assist the Director to implement HSF strategic priorities through the development of program specific operational plans and metrics

Deliver and provide oversight to health promotion programs and initiatives at a provincial level

Monitor key health policies and partnership priorities and programs in Nova Scotia

Deliver and manage health promotion programs (including Heart&Stroke Walkabout™) including program development, evaluation, outreach and promotion

Remain current on best practices in health promotion and health communication

Report to the Director regularly on local activities, successes, challenges, and insights to inform HSF mission and health promotion strategic priorities

Contribute to HSF provincial and national working groups and initiatives

Leadership

Supervise the work of department staff, including Health Promotion Coordinators for Heart&Stroke Walkabout™, and interns where applicable

Participate in the budget planning process and manage budget pertaining to applicable programs

Provide leadership and pertinent resources to health partners and volunteers engaged in provincial advocacy efforts

Act as a media spokesperson as requested to support media relations and communications initiatives

REQUIREMENTS

3-5 years progressive experience working in the areas of health promotion, health education, community development and advocacy

Master’s degree in a related field (public health, health sciences, social science, physical activity/kinesiology, public administration/policy, nursing or adult education)

Experience working in a non-profit, government, or health care organization/institution

Experience in developing and supporting collaborative relationships and partnerships

Ability to plan and coordinate activities, organize multiple tasks and prioritize work

Strong analytical and problem solving skills and ability to respond quickly with good solutions

Goal oriented and proactive

Exceptional writing skills

Experience with grant writing and the development of funding proposals

Ability to structure, engage and present information clearly to various audiences including verbal presentations, and the development of formal correspondence, briefs and reports

Informed and up to date on health promotion practice and research, including on community engagement, community development, capacity building and chronic disease prevention

Strong computer skills with experience in MS Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, databases and web-based applications

Language skills in addition to English are an asset

A valid driver’s license is required since travel and some evening and weekend work is required.
