Health Quality Ontario (HQO) is the provincial advisor on the quality of health care in Ontario, evaluating the effectiveness of health care technologies and services, providing evidence-based recommendations, reporting to the public on the quality of the health system, and supporting the spread of quality improvement throughout the system.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting to the Director Communications, the Communications Specialist is responsible for providing a range of services including writing and editing for print and digital, media relations, event coordination, and responding to requests for information from both internal and external stakeholders. In addition to working on projects across HQO, the Communications Specialist role serves as the key communications lead responsible for supporting all of the communications needs of one of the organization’s branches, from planning through to execution. The Specialist is also the lead for internal communications.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO?

Communications Planning and Materials Creation and Coordination

o Writing and editing of written materials including internal and external newsletters, web content, news releases, brochures and other materials, translating internal client needs into clear direction

o Research/track stakeholder communication vehicles and activities/events to support identification of partner communications opportunities

o Support graphic designer, providing basic editing services in programs such as InDesign

Media Relations & Public Liaison

o Support the media relations lead in responding to incoming media requests. o Proactively pitch media on stories related to HQO report launches o Manage interview requests/quote requests in accordance with policy o Draft briefing notes to prepare HQO interviewees for interaction with media. o Identify trends and themes in the media that may impact the organization and its activities and create

regular reports to inform Communications activities o Prepare issues management notes as required o Answer or redirect inquiries to appropriate channels (where applicable). o Create and maintain a log of standard responses to most frequently asked questions

Internal Communications

o Act as the Communications lead on the Internal Communications Committee o Create (in conjunction with the Director) and implement an internal communications plan o Maintain assigned areas of HQO’s intranet (e.g., calendar of events, news items, CEO weekly update) o Lead team of intranet “super-users” responsible for maintaining individual branch intranet pages o Lead a refresh of HQO’s intranet site

Event Management

o Supporting the execution of conferences throughout the year, including vendor/venue sourcing and procurement (where applicable)

o Support the coordination of HQO participation in external events (such as trade shows and conferences)

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

To be considered for this opportunity, you will have:

Education:

o Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Communications/Journalism/Marketing o University with Communications degree or accompanying post-grad diploma preferred

Experience:

o Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Communications role. o 5 years’ experience and familiarity with health or non-profit sectors is an asset.

Technical or professional qualifications or certifications/designations:

o Above education combined with experience working in Ontario’s health system preferred. o Experience with graphic design software, including InDesign an asset.

Key Competencies:

o Demonstrated project management, event planning and coordination experience

o Proven ability to write and edit a range of communications materials

o Demonstrated issues management experience; ability to identify trends and themes in the media that may impact organizational business decisions

o Proven ability to develop and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships

o Demonstrated experience using graphic design software programs
