Harbourside Transportation Consultants (HTC) is seeking a Civil Designer for our St. John’s, NL office. The Civil Designer utilizes advanced AutoCAD Civil 3D design skills, comprehensive experience and knowledge of the civil engineering discipline to collaborate closely with a Project Engineer in the setting up, generation and production of civil drawings on projects involving streets/roads, intersections, utilities, grading and draining elements. This position may include the duties and responsibilities as assigned to a Project Manager. The Designer must represent the Company with quality in concert with knowledge and understanding of the project objectives. The Designer works with limited direction under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer to perform the essential functions, tasks, and duties listed below to prepare designs and contract documents.

Duties – Essential Functions of the Position:
Shall be familiar with relevant codes and standards and be aware of emerging industry practices.
Be able to provide input for the resolution of engineering queries from clients or third parties.
Possess advanced and demonstrable AutoCAD Civil 3D design skills and efficient and proficient in:

  • Importing GIS data
  • Processing survey data
  • Creating surfaces (both existing and design of proposed)
  • Creating profiles, corridors, and cross sections
  • Estimating quantities
  • Creating construction drawings
  • Utilizing data references
  • Collaborating with geographically separated resources

Working knowledge of the engineering principles related to civil-site, infrastructure, and roadways.
Working knowledge of construction specifications and plans and applicable regulations relating to work performed.

Able to effectively work both independently and as a part of a larger team, on multiple, short-duration assignments or on single, large, multi-discipline projects across large geographic distances.

Able to manage the pressures associated with fast-paced environments, critical design tolerances and tight schedules.

Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques of modern construction.

Able to estimate required production resources necessary, prepare proposals, and execute the work within budget and on schedule.

Able to adapt his/her schedule to meet needs as they arise (i.e., able to come in early to prepare for a meeting or stay late to respond to a client’s last-minute request).

Qualifications: Minimum Requirements:

  • 5 years’ experience operating Autodesk Civil 3D software and preparing engineering drawings required.
  • Experienced in site and infrastructure design – both working in tandem with a team and alone.
  • Experience in the use of AutoTurn.
  • Experienced in drawing development (Plan and Profile Sheets, Cross-Sections, Typical Sections, Detail Sheets) and associated models.
  • Capable of adhering to existing company CAD/Quality Standards and utilize them properly and accurately.
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced level Civil 3D skills while collaborating under the supervision of a Professional Engineer.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. The ability to take broad feedback and direction and translate into detailed and highly accurate plans.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work flexible schedules and overtime as needed.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and sit for long periods of time.
