The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, built in 1894 in the historic village of Steveston, is a living monument to the individuals involved in BC’s fishing industry. The site is operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, a non-profit society and registered charity. Working in partnership with Parks Canada, the Society works to preserve the history of the Canada’s West Coast fishing industry. Reporting to the Marketing and Visitor Services Manager, the Head Interpreter plays a leadership role on the Heritage Interpreter team by setting an example for other interpreters and frontline staff to follow.

Responsibilities: • Deliver site tours and educational programs • Perform front desk duties, including greeting visitors, responding to visitor inquiries, and conducting admission and Cannery Store retail transactions • Assist with training, supervising and evaluating Interpreters on visitor services, public programming and education program delivery • Assist with training, supervising and evaluating volunteers on public program delivery • Create and oversee the work schedule for interpretive staff and tour guide volunteers • Assist in the development of Interpreter training materials • Assist with on-site supervision during rentals and special events • Problem solve in emergency situations • Act as liaison between interpretive and administrative staff

Qualifications: • Excellent customer service skills • Experience in museum programming and public speaking • Ability to work independently and to multi-task • Ability to work as an effective team member • Attention to detail • Previous experience working with children an asset • Fluency in English is required; fluency in French an asset Hours and compensation: This is a permanent, part-time position for 3 days per week (7 hours per day). Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Some evening work may be required. Salary: $16/hr plus 4% in lieu of vacations.
