We are seeking a dynamic and motivated person to take on the joint role of General Manager of Green Belt Tennis Club and Executive Director of Tennis Newfoundland and Labrador. This opportunity is a senior position in one of Canada’s fastest growing sports, and provides an opportunity to make a difference to the sport and provincial sporting landscape. Your role will be to ensure that the Green Belt Tennis club is operated at the highest standard and will include supervising all staff, doing payroll, maintaining the financial accounts, and ensuring the facility is properly maintained and that all members enjoy an outstanding experience. You will also be the Executive Director of Tennis Newfoundland and Labrador (TNL) where you will ensure the financial accounts are current and well documented, act as the lead contact for all tennis development in the province including working with the national federation and provincial sporting organizations and in general lead the development effort of growing the sport of tennis in the province. This is a unique opportunity for the right person to have a real leadership role in both provincial and national sporting development, while also managing and leading the only indoor tennis club in the province. You will be required to work independently and deliver against strategic objectives and report to the respective boards of the two organizations.

Roles and Responsibilities

This is a joint position and while each has its unique responsibilities they are very interrelated and share many of the same responsibilities to grow the game of tennis and operate the facilities in an efficient and professional manner.

As General Manager of the Green Belt tennis club you will be expected to:

  • Support our tennis professionals to run effective junior and adult programs and events.
  • Develop marketing and promotional programs to grow membership and participation at the club.
  • Plan, organize and monitor the desk staff in an efficient and professional manner.
  • Manage and maintain the accounting system including bank accounts, desk sales, staff timesheets and payroll.
  • Collect dues and fees and manage cash and banking.
  • Purchase supplies, manager suppliers and pay club bills.
  • Research and apply for applicable government grants.
  • Manage the providers for the upkeep and maintenance of the club facilities and ensure a safe and healthy environment.
  • Provide monthly operational reports to the President and Board and support the board as required.

As TNL Executive Director you will be expected to:

  • Work with the TNL board to develop strategic plans and to interact with the national tennis federation and regional tennis federations to grow the sport of tennis in the province.
  • Represent TNL at national meetings with Tennis Canada and ensure compliance with the funding grants associated with program funding provided.
  • Act as the lead spokesperson for TNL in regional and national forums and with local organizations.
  • Manage tournaments and events sanctioned by TNL in the province and maintain the records and systems associated with the events.
  • Manage and maintain the accounting system including bank accounts, staff timesheets and payroll.
  • Be the prime contact for the sport of tennis in the province to promote the sport and work with the board to develop new facilities and new regional clubs to grow the sport.

Required Experience and Qualifications

Ideally you are a sports enthusiast will experience in a club environment or other sporting association. We are looking for a highly motivated person who wants to make a difference and has the financial and management background to fulfill the tasks required and the energy to grow the sport of tennis and participation at the club and in the province. This is a leadership position and you will have the opportunity to make a difference and be an innovator and game changer.

Expected experience and qualifications:

  • A post secondary Diploma or Degree in business management or accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Previous senior role as a club, association or office manger ideally dealing with members and the public.
  • Previous experience in banking, and maintaining accounts. and payroll systems.
  • Knowledge of not for profit organizations and governance and reporting to boards of such.
  • Proven leadership role in supervising staff and managing people in a dynamic environment.

Other skills:

  • Proven leadership abilities to motivate and organize both staff and volunteers
  • Strategic thinking to develop plans and strategies to grow the club and the sport
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Familiar with Simply Accounting, Web content management or similar software
  • Strong IT skills for Microsoft office and related products
  • A willingness to multi task and manage time in a dynamic environment
  • Willing to travel occasionally to attend national and regional events
  • An outgoing personality with good people skills and customer relations

Position and Applications

This is a senior position and will be jointly funded by Green Belt and TNL and will be a full time permanent position. You will work out of the Green Belt Tennis club office in St. John’s and you will be expected to show flexibility in your hours as required of a management position.
Compensation is in the range of $60,000 – $70,000 based on experience and suitability plus the option to earn an annual bonus. Vacation is expected to be 3 weeks annually and some flex time for extra hours work occasionally.

The Green Belt Tennis Club offers 6 heated indoor courts, 4 outdoor courts, and full-featured clubhouse within the city of St. John’s Newfoundland.
