Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre (GCCRC) is a provider of community social services with a holistic approach to community development. We are committed to providing high quality programs and services in the London community for children, youth, families and seniors.

YOUTH SETTLEMENT OUTREACH WORKER

The project, Neighbourhood Based Integration for Newcomers, seeks to enhance the settlement and employment supports available to vulnerable newcomers, with a focus on refugees and refugee claimants, to facilitate their social and/or economic integration.

Targeted programming will help refugee and vulnerable newcomer youth adapt to a new society, while promoting school success, social connections and community engagement. The project will serve refugees and other vulnerable newcomers between the ages of 12 and 24.

Reporting: The Youth Settlement Outreach Worker will report to the Program Manager and will work collaboratively with other youth staff within the organization.

Position Details:

Starting date August 7th if possible. This is a contract position until March 31, 2019.

Commitment:

The position is 15 hours per week. The candidate must be available to work some evenings and weekends. This position is working with youth and requires the flexibility to accommodate newly identified needs.

Individual services

  • Meet with vulnerable newcomer youth and asses their settlement, social and mental health needs and set individual priorities; if intense support is needed a referral will be made to settlement crisis worker
  • Facilitate referrals to the most appropriate community services
  • Follow up with youth to make sure that they successfully accessed the services via phone, email or in person
  • Support newcomer youth to volunteer and develop life skills and interpersonal skills

Group services:

  • In coordination with other agency staff create, plan, and facilitate a variety of youth focused programs and events to meet the needs of newcomer youth and provide them with opportunities to be engaged in their community
  • Conduct outreach activities to connect with vulnerable newcomer youth and families in the neighbourhood
  • Provide opportunities for newcomer youth to be engaged and productive members of their community
  • Identify and provide workshops related to newcomer youth needs including, financial literacy; pre-employment sessions; rights and responsibilities etc.
  • Outreach services:
  • Develops and distributes promotional materials for programming,
  • Establish partnerships and relationships with local agencies, schools, etc. to promote program and recruit appropriate youth and when appropriate partners for events and activities

  • Key Qualifications:
  • Degree or Diploma in the Human Services field of study- CYW, CYC, SSW, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with newcomer youth 12-24 years of age;
  • minimum 2 years
  • Knowledge around youth engagement strategies
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, strong organizational, and time management
  • skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with report writing, maintaining statistics,
  • Capacity to build relationships with youth, parents, community members, and
  • Professionals
  • Proven ability to work with youth of diverse and ethnic/cultural backgrounds
  • Motivated, self-starter and able to work in a fast paced environment
  • Capacity to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office, email, and database entry
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate in a second language an asset
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required
  • Clearance through a Vulnerable populations police screening process ( at own
  • cost)
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain at own cost)
