Gibson Energy’s Summer Student Program is an excellent opportunity for students currently enrolled in post-secondary education to work and gain experience over the summer months, as well as meet and build relationships with internal stakeholders and other students.

Currently, we have an opening for a Summer Student to join our Operations team in Hardisty. The Lab Technician will operate a petroleum-testing lab including the operation, maintenance and calibration of the lab instruments, record keeping, the ordering of supplies and ensuring that all tests be performed according to applicable standards.

Duties will include:

  • Perform sediment and water analysis and density testing on petroleum samples
  • Perform other tests including RVP, viscosity, sulfur, GC analysis of LPG and condensate, and other tests as may be required
  • Maintain and calibrate lab instruments as required
  • Keep records relating to test results and calibrations
  • Collect samples as required
  • Witness samples at our suppliers and customers facilities
  • Maintain safe work procedures and a healthy lab environment according to Gibson Safety and Environmental policies
  • Be familiar with applicable testing standards and manufacturers recommended procedures regarding operation, calibration and maintenance of instruments
  • Order lab supplies as required
  • Relate to our customers by addressing their concerns about test results
  • Keep up to date with changes to testing standards
  • Recommend replacement and new equipment when necessary
  • Knowledgeable in MS office especially Word and Excel
  • Perform basic housekeeping duties
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSS&E) through participation in all applicable HSS&E programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company HSS&E policies and procedures

KEY SKILLS:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills;
  • A motivated team player, capable of managing several concurrent and varied projects;
  • A quick learner who approaches all projects with a sense of urgency;
  • Familiarity with MS Outlook, Excel, Word
  • Gas Chromatograph knowledge
  • Drivers License
  • Basic understanding of chemistry
  • Knowledge of ISO17025 principles or equivalent
  • Familiarity with a LIMS system would be an asset

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Essential Work Experience):

  • Currently enrolled in a chemistry related post secondary or technical program;
  • Advanced computer skills required in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • A degree or diploma from a technical institution in a related field would be an asset.
  • Knowledge or experience in the petroleum industry would be an asset

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Most of work is completed in an office but could also involve sampling within the terminal. Due to daily condition changes, employee may be exposed to different weather elements
  • This position requires physical mobility and able to perform duties in the vicinity of dangerous goods
