Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill the position of Essential Services Worker (Term). The key function of this position is to provide a safe and supportive environment for participants to access essential supports and services, to have an opportunity to socialize, and to participate in a variety of meaningful activities.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Identify known and unknown participants accessing the program which may cause harm to other participants and use de-escalation skills to decrease likelihood of violence towards other participants, staff and vandalism of property
  • Monitor activities and participants behaviors in the Robert Tegler Friendship Room (RTFR) and enforce agency policies and procedures as required
  • Monitor and ensure participants entering and exiting the RTFR are conducted in an orderly manner
  • Provide individual support, crisis intervention support, and advocacy to participants as required
  • Engage participants in purposeful conversation
  • Assist participants to access Bissell Centre services available in the RTFR, e.g. coffee, laundry, showers, local phone calls, lunches, haircuts and other services.
  • Assist and direct participants to access outside services available in the RTFR or Bissell East, e.g. AISH, SFI, AADAC, Alberta Health–STI
  • Refer participants to Intake for immediate intervention and initial assessment
  • Assist with maintaining the RTFR including general cleanliness, stocking supplies, organizing storage areas, doing the laundry and reporting required repairs
  • Assist with ongoing training and support of volunteers
  • Assist with other program activities and events as required, e.g. intake shifts, and/or Moonlight Bay camps

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

  • Diploma in Social Work or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year relevant employment experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, good time management, strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel programs
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Familiarity working with high risk populations and an understanding of Aboriginal cultures, history and current issues
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks are required.
