Equilibrium is a multidisciplinary firm specializing in the reduction of contaminated site environmental liability through a more thorough understanding of human health and ecological risks and the application of standard and non-standard remediation and reclamation techniques. We are actively engaged in research activities, funded by industries and provincial/federal governments, to better understand relationships between substances encountered in the environment and associated adverse effects on human and ecological health, including abiotic aspects such as soil structure.

We provide support to various clients throughout Western Canada and internationally in areas of: risk assessment and risk management, Phase 1, 2, and 3 investigations, standard remediation and reclamation approaches, as well as advanced remediation technology implementation and research. A key business area is conducting field, laboratory, and desk work for characterizing environmental impacts, understanding liability, and methods of maximizing risk reduction while considering socioeconomic implications. Position Summary:

Equilibrium is an innovative and growing company based in Calgary, AB. The position is based at the head-office in the Calgary area, and includes a primary focus on field work in various areas across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The position title is Intermediate (or Senior depending on qualifications) Environmental Soil Investigation and Remediation Specialist.

The successful team member will be responsible for:

  • participating in the Equilibrium safety program;
  • coordinating, managing, and executing field programs including Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 Environmental Site Assessments as well as groundwater characterization, with a focus on drilling and remediation activities,

o learning and applying investigation strategies that generate data to support risk assessment studies and risk-based remediation guidelines,

o field work to comprise approximately 40% of the total time;

  • coordinating and managing both small-scale and large-scale remediation and reclamation projects,

o learning and applying risk-based remediation guidelines and targeting remediation strategies to meet risk-based remediation closure;

  • completing all aspects of ground disturbance for field programs including planning stages prior to the program, leading the field program, and coordinating third party contractors;
  • tracking and compiling field data, providing daily cost updates and client specific updates;
  • conducting analytical data validation and Quality Assurance/Quality Control
  • writing technical reports on Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 investigations, drill program plans, as well as remediation activities and results,

o applying relevant Alberta (or Saskatchewan) Tier 1 and Tier 2 regulatory soil and groundwater guidelines, assessing exceedences, and learning how to develop Tier 2 pathway elimination and Tier 2 modification guidelines for hydrocarbons and SST guidelines for salinity impacts;

  • participating in remediation technique innovation and research;
  • training and mentoring of junior field staff; and,
  • working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team for both field and office based programs.


The ideal team candidate will have 5 to 8 years of experience in leading environmental investigation and remediation field programs including all aspects of ground disturbance. The candidate must have an eagerness to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team, with an enthusiastic attitude as well as strong verbal and written communication skills. A passion for delivering outstanding work is critical. As the position involves approximately 40% field work, applicants must be willing and able to travel for a significant portion of the year and perform physically demanding manual labour tasks in a safe work environment. Experience with at least 20 drill programs and 10 remediation programs is strongly favored.

Experience in groundwater and reclamation is considered an asset but is not required. A university degree in environmental science, soil science, engineering, hydrogeology, agrology, or toxicology is considered an asset, but not required if work experience is particularly relevant. Membership or eligibility for membership as a Professional Agrologist, Registered Technologist in Agrology, Professional Engineer, Professional Geologist or Hydrogeologist, Professional Biologist, or Environmental Professional is a firm requirement.
