Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 40,000 students and 3,500 employees in 89 schools and other sites.

The primary responsibilities of the positions are to provide Early Learning children
(aged 3 – 7 yrs), with multi-cultural experiences that focus on a particular culture and language. The positions work together with home and school in supporting family programs as well as inclusive classroom supports. The broad objectives of the positions include: improving students’ oral and listening comprehension in their first language (which supports the learning of English as a second language); to act as an interpreter where needed between families, school teams and the multi-disciplinary team; to increase appreciation of various cultures with all children and create dual language stories from the ideas and thoughts of the child in English and the first language of the child (both fact and fictional) offered in both print and digital formats for reading, singing, and rhythmical movements both in school and home environments.

The positions work closely with the Speech Language Pathologists as well as our Early Literacy Intervention Consultant and Early Learning Consultants and is paid primarily through Program Unit Funding.

The positions are within the Unifor Collective Agreement and are 10 month, Level 9, temporary, full-time, positions commencing October 19, 2015 with a salary range of $4324.00 – $5624.00 per month.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Ø Identify and plan cultural and language activities that promote oral expression for students from pre-K – Grade 2 (both in school and for family programming);

Ø Provide interpreter services as needed;

Ø Support children identified with severe language needs in their first language;

Ø Work directly with students to involve them with language and cultural activities based on identified language goals;

Ø Incorporate the use of 21st century skills using the inquiry process whenever possible – within the context of the early learning philosophy;

Ø Work with early learning consultants to align activities with the appropriate level learner outcomes;

Ø Create dual language stories from the ideas and thoughts of the child in both their first language and English – and offered in print and digital forms – using children’s photographs, illustrations or video as visual supports. Literary forms include story – fact and fiction, song and poetry;

Ø Maintain credentials through a range of professional development activities;

Ø Participate in unit meetings and provide input into short- and long-term planning strategic activities.

Qualifications:
Ø Degree or diploma in an area related to early childhood, plus three years of directly related experience;

Ø Knowledge of Alberta Education system in general and language programming in particular;

Ø General knowledge of the early learning philosophy and early language acquisition;

Ø Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and supportive
counselling skills;

Ø Knowledge of program planning and project management techniques;

Ø Ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton;

Ø Fluent in another language(s) in addition to English. (looking for all languages and in particular for: Tagalog, Ukrainian, Mandarin, Spanish)
