Did you know that 80-90% of all data in the history of the world was generated in the last two years? The phenomenon of big data – where information comes from different sources ranging from connected devices to sensors and GPS – offers enormous potential to develop innovative products and services, or in extreme cases, heading off disaster.

In February of 2013, an epidemic called SARS hit hard in Toronto. This might seem unrelated to data, but is it? Did you know that a few weeks prior to Toronto acknowledging they had a SARS outbreak that Google contacted WHO (World Health Organization) telling them that the virus had spread to our city from China? How did they know, they are not health practitioners? Well, they used Google! Toronto residents were querying symptoms through Google search and the company was able to predict based on search criteria that the disease had spread to Toronto. Cool right? This is predictive analytics at work.
