Founded in 1989, DeafBlind Ontario Services is a not-for-profit organization that helps individuals who are deafblind increase their independence and improve their quality of life through specialized services. With residential locations and community services programs across the province, their services extend into a wide range of communities in Ontario.

Hours:
Availability must meet the needs of DeafBlind Ontario Services’ clients; typically, evenings, overnights and weekends.

Position Summary:
An Intervenor facilitates access to environmental information that is usually gained through vision and hearing for clients living with deafblindness. The Intervenor will assist clients to gather information, learn concepts and skills, develop communication and language, and establish relationships that lead to greater independence. By building a bond of trust, Intervenors use communication and active engagement that opens new doors of opportunity for individuals who are deafblind. This enables them to interact with the world around them and achieve as much independence as possible, to enjoy ad embrace life’s journey.

Job Duties:

  • Assist clients in

reaching their full potential by communicating their needs, likes and
preferences, and empowering clients to make informed decisions and be active
participants in all areas of their lives.

  • Responsible to work as

part of a team to support the client(s) in making informed choices and
decisions. Follows activity plans, based
on client’s personal plans and provide input on the client’s progress to the
team.

  • Assist with the development and implementation

of client strategy plans.

  • Provide personal care as required

(e.g. lifts and transfers, toileting, personal hygiene, medication
administration, etc.).

Requirements:

  • Minimum of one-year

post-secondary education in Intervenor for Deafblind Persons, Developmental
Services Worker, Social Services Worker, Community Services Worker, Personal
Support Worker or related field.

  • One to three years of

related work experience.

  • Knowledge or willingness to learn techniques

for providing Intervenor Services to people with deafblindness through a total
communication approach.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills,

and must demonstrate respect, leadership, trust and teamwork.

  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • A Certified Congenital DeafBlind Specialist

(CCDBS) is considered an asset or a willingness to work towards certification.
