Purpose of Position:

Explore, is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage and administered by the provincial and territorial ministries/departments responsible for education or postsecondary education, in conjunction with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC). Since its inception in 1971, the program has provided eligible students in Canada with the opportunity to learn their second official language and become familiar with the cultures represented by that language.

This position is responsible for coordinating the annual EXPLORE English Immersion Program here at Dalhousie University. The Academic Director is responsible for the management of the academic content, curricula, and delivery of the program; along with the management of instructional staff and monitors. This position reports directly to the Senior Manager of Conference Services and will work closely with the program administer on operational requirements for the program.

The Explore program manager is required occasionally to work a variable schedule (evenings, weekends, and irregular workdays).

There is a diverse workload often requiring simultaneous organization. Work is performed under minimal supervision and requires exercising independent judgment within established guidelines. The ability to deal effectively with complex issues and concerns in a cross-culturally sensitive environment is an essential element of this position.

Representative duties:

  • Managing curriculum design, development, delivery, and evaluation across the English Language Program.
  • Managing instructional staff and monitors.
  • Recruiting and hiring instructional staff and monitors.
  • Conducting instructor and staff performance appraisals in addition to coaching and mentoring to ensure best practices.
  • Functioning effectively in a team environment; striving to achieve optimal collective results; supporting and contributing to team goals and Explore’s strategic directions.
  • Facilitating preprogram training for instructional staff and monitors.
  • Reviewing the socio-cultural program to comply with requirements as defined by CMEC.
  • Assisting the Explore Program Administrator in responding to parent and participant inquiries prior to and during the event.
  • Maintaining and overseeing the currency of a library of teaching resources to include sample lesson plans, training requirements and workshops.
  • Providing application information, program policies, and procedures for distribution via the Program Administrator to bursary and non-bursary students when they apply to (and are accepted into) the program.
  • Liaising with the Senior Manager of Conference Services and Explore Program Administrator on matters relating to program structure and practices.
  • Attending the CMEC annual conference organized all EXPLORE Program directors from participating programs across Canada.
  • Informing CMEC and National Coordinator of matters relating to program structure, student participation, and financial needs, and making requests for any variances, if deemed necessary for the integrity of the Dalhousie Explore program
  • Advising the Explore Program Administrator of any emergency (medical, personal or discipline) relating to the students or staff of the Program and ensuring that information and assistance are provided to those parties that need to know
  • Coordinating placement of students in class levels.
  • Running weekly teacher meetings and participating in other scheduled staff meetings.
  • Supervising Explore staff and students during classes and workshops on weekday mornings and during organized socio-cultural activities on weekdays, evenings and weekends.
  • Ensuring students are aware of, understand, and comply with program policies and regulations.
  • Submitting the final program report for Conference Services and CMEC in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s in Education
  • TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related field and 5 years’ experience in teaching second language acquisition
  • Excellent demonstrated leadership skills
  • Administrative and supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills
  • Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification

Desirable:

  • Previous experience with the Explore Program considered an asset
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and French desirable
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse needs is also desirable
