The Publishing Systems Specialist acts as the technical resource responsible for desktop publishing and file conversion tasks.

This includes: the accurate and timely creation, modification, and archiving of both English and French Standards in print and electronic format. Using advanced knowledge of CSA publishing tools and formatting requirements, the incumbent is responsible for assisting Standards Development or Learning Services staff as required, to transform draft documents in raw or semi-complete format to a high quality saleable electronic and print ready product.

With this advanced knowledge, the incumbent is also responsible for generating complex electronic files of various formats for multiple stages of committee work and French translation. Responsibilities require liaising primarily with editors, and occasionally with Standards Development or Learning Services staff.

Accountable for accurately creating, formatting, and revising, complex electronic books with a high degree of accuracy. Responsible for the creation, modification, maintenance, and conversion of highly complex document elements such as multi-page tables, technical illustrations, mathematical equations, and internal cross-references.

Responsible for revising electronic documents based on complex editorial markup from committee members, project managers, translators, and editors. Responsible for ensuring the integrity of the electronic document repositories for draft and published standards and related documents (e.g. shared network drives, Documentum).

Responsible for the conversion of electronic files between various formats to enable draft development, translation, editing and production (e.g. from Word toXML, from XML to RTF, RTF , etc.)

Performs simple proof-reading tasks as required and to ensure that their own work is correct and complete. May also perform basic review and proof-reading of desktop publishing or file conversion jobs from external vendors for correctness and completeness of the conversion.

Knowledgeable about CSA policies and procedures and able to provide Standards Development staff with input regarding document design and production workflow.

Recommends enhancements regarding policies, procedures, training, and computer software.
Assists with updating any applicable job procedures and instructions. Within the scope of their specific accountabilities, assist with mentoring of internal customers, colleagues, and outside suppliers where required.

„X Secondary School Diploma with a minimum of 3 years of related experience or, College
Diploma and 1 year of related experience
„X Publishing systems experience including knowledge of various publishing software
„X Experience using XML applications such as Arbortext is preferred. Adobe Framemaker,
Illustrator, and Acrobat are assets. Knowledge of editorial markup and symbols
„X Strong team player with keen attention to detail and proven independent problem-
solving skills
„X Bilingualism (English/French) and experience using Mathtype are assets
