Head Stage Carpenter

Confederation Centre of the Arts is currently accepting applications for the position of Head Stage Carpenter. The Head Stage Carpenter reporting to the Technical Director will be part of a dynamic team that oversees, advises and operates the largest theatre in Atlantic Canada. They shall have a thorough knowledge of stage house mechanics, and operation. They will provide efficient and reliable preparation, maintenance, and operation of all stage machinery, rigging, and scenery. The Head Stage Carpenter will manage labour resources within the established budgets and schedules of their department. The Head Stage Carpenter will ensure a safe and clean work environment on stage. They will function as an advisor and consultant to clients of the Confederation Centre and the Charlottetown Festival. A high level of autonomy and self-direction is expected from the individual department head as well as exceling within a team environment. They must be able to work with professionals and amateurs.

The Head Stage Carpenter shall have 10+ years of experience working in related aspects of professional theatre. The Confederation Centre anticipates that all department heads will make every effort to remain current and up to date in their respective fields.

Specific Job Functions :

  • Be responsible for the handling, repair and maintenance of stage scenery on-stage. They shall supervise the take-in, set-up, operation, scene changes and strike of all scenic elements and rigging for Confederation Centre productions, rentals, or any other events in the Confederation Centre of the Arts complex.
  • Supervise all activities directly related to the operation of the stage house, fly gallery, orchestra pit and backstage areas.
  • Be responsible for the safe operation of all stage apparatus and machinery. This shall include, but is not strictly limited to: all components of the fly system, orchestra pit, stage deck, soft goods, and additional rigging. They must have thorough knowledge, and training of safe scenic rigging practices. Further, they must inspect all stage apparatus, rigging, sets and decor brought into the Centre for use in any performances to ensure compatibility with in house safety regulations.
  • Be responsible for the creation of stage crew estimates and crew calls for The Charlottetown Festival in consultation with the Technical Director.
  • Be responsible for the formation of stage crew estimates and crew calls for clients of Confederation Centre of the Arts Mainstage Theatre in consultation with the Technical Director.
  • Be responsible to record and submit all hours worked by members of the carpentry crew.
  • Be responsible to ensure that all work done by the carpentry crew is completed in the safest most efficient manner possible.
  • Work with the Technical Director and the design team to answer any technical questions and to assist with costing preliminary designs.
  • Consult with other members of the production team, to maintain the technical and artistic integrity of all Confederation Centre of the Arts productions.
  • Attend production meetings, staff meetings, technical rehearsals and note sessions, as scheduled.
  • Assist the scene shop carpenters in planning and construction of scenic elements and rigging for Confederation Centre of the Arts productions, as scheduled.
  • Serve as running crew for Confederation Centre of the Arts productions, special events, or rentals as assigned by the theatre.
  • Coordinate rigging and stage needs for all Confederation Centre of the Arts productions, special events and rentals as assigned by the theatre.
  • Track rigging, drape inventory and maintain accurate records in regards to storage, use, safety, maintenance requirements of equipment. They will also contribute to the overall production archive.
  • Inspect and maintain all stage and rigging equipment and tools.
  • Maintain the stage and storage areas to ensure they are always kept in a safe clean and organized state.
  • Advise the Technical Director of tasks or items that will require the release of additional funds, personnel, or special tools to complete.
  • Be responsible for any other reasonable and lawful duties within their jurisdiction.

Qualifications / Required Skills:

  • Must have 10+ years of experience working in related aspects of technical theatre, with at least two years experience as a Head Stage Carpenter.
  • Must have experience and training in automated stage and fly systems, scenic carpentry, and rigging.
  • Must have the ability to read and understand floor plans and technical drawings.
  • The ideal Head Stage Carpenter is a responsible, detail orientated individual, who is conscious at all times of safety and the well-being of the carpentry crew, performers and all individuals within the area for which they are responsible. This individual demonstrates attention to detail, and a willingness to collaborate with other team members in the resolution of production challenges.
  • The Head Stage Carpenter is a knowledgeable team player who is alert to opportunities for improving the set-up and staging of scenic elements, and who is able to communicate challenges and opportunities in a concise, timely manner to senior management.

Additional skills:

Skills that would be an asset to this position are: pneumatics (the use of stage castors, brakes and actuators), stage health and safety practices, scenic art, and a working knowledge of CAD software.
