This permanent part time, 18hr/week position assists adults living with psychiatric disabilities to move forward in their personal recovery and independence. The SIL worker implements the Individual Service Plans (ISP) of the clients assigned to the worker, as defined by Abbotsford Mental Health, and provides a positive liaison with Abbotsford Mental Health, clients, community ( e.g . landlords) and government agencies.


  • Review ISPs regularly with clients, communicate recommendations and/or changes to Mental Health case manager
  • Implement ISPs for SIL clients:
  • Encourage clients to set goals for themselves
  • Create social and leisure opportunities which will reduce isolation, increase self-esteem, and establish social and support networks
  • Develop personal support systems for clients: family, friends, community groups, therapist/case manager
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with external agencies/ministries e.g . Mental Health Center, Abby House, Mental Health After Hours, Employment Aid Workers, landlords and building managers
  • Assist client with life skills development e.g . apartment maintenance/cleaning schedule, personal hygiene, budgeting, grocery shopping, nutrition, menu planning, exercise, relationships, coping skills, boundary issues
  • Report any concerns regarding clients to the appropriate Mental Health case manager
  • Together with Mental Health case manager, educate client about their mental illness, coping skills, etc.
  • Monthly, create activity plan with bi-weekly activities
  • Keep up-to-date records, provide regular written reports and update Mental Health case manager weekly
  • Attend meetings as required


  • Community Mental Health Worker/Social Services certificate or approved equivalent
  • Knowledge/understanding of psychotropic medications is an asset
  • Previous experience supporting people with chronic mental illness or concurrent disorder in the community is preferred
  • Philosophy of service and support for people who have a mental illness that is in line with Communitas philosophy (using Spirit of Gentleness principles)
  • Familiar with and able to implement Psychosocial Rehabilitation principles fostering a belief in the recovery process
  • Ability to be motivational and positive in interactions with clients
  • Ability to take initiative with creativity and flexibility
  • Ability to develop rapport and communicate effectively with people living with mental illness
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training/in-service training
  • Excellent teamwork skills maintaining honest, direct and respectful working relationships; as well as being able to work independently
  • Ability to observe, record and evaluate change in human behaviour
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and mediation skills, excellent interpersonal skills
  • Use of personal vehicle required for client appointments, etc.
  • Possession of an Emergency First Aid/CPR certificate, Class 4 Drivers License (unrestricted), and vaccination for Hepatitis B
