Director, Planning and Development Services

The City of White Rock is a unique, ocean-side community of 20,000 citizens known for its sunny weather, expansive beach, historic pier, delightful restaurants, and sense of community. The City is located half an hour south of Vancouver on the shore of Semiahmoo Bay. This is an exciting time for The City as they are experiencing unprecedented growth. This creates an exciting opportunity for an innovative and technically savvy planning leader to make a meaningful impact on urban growth and development while having the support of a dedicated and collaborative staff complement. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and as a valued member of the Senior Management team, you will provide leadership to all functions within the department including land use planning, development applications, building approvals and zoning along with economic development and by-law enforcement. You will be responsible for providing strategic direction and annual work plans for the department as well as the planning, coordination and supervision of department activities. You will work closely with developers, business representatives, government officials, contractors, consultants, and the public. You will appear before Council on a regular basis and are the spokesperson for development planning in the City.

The successful candidate for this position is a visionary leader with demonstrated strengths in strategic thinking and communication including articulating a clear vision on the current and future direction of urban growth and development and strong report writing skills. You possess an open, team-oriented leadership style and welcome the challenge of seeking continuous improvements in organizational efficiency. It is essential that you are able to develop and maintain positive relationships with a wide variety of internal and external customers and that you are able to demonstrate you bring a distinguished customer service philosophy. You are respected for your ability to gain commitment on municipal priorities and recognized for your positive corporate contribution.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a post-graduate degree in planning, supplemented by a minimum of ten years progressively responsible managerial experience, including experience in a senior management role. Membership or eligibility for membership in PIBC and/or the Canadian Institute of Planners is required.
