Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, the Associate Legal Counsel delivers strategic, high quality, timely and cost effective legal services to municipal clients primarily in the following functional areas of the law: Prosecution, Litigation, & Administrative Tribunal Law;

Prosecutes under Provincial and Federal statutes and Municipal by-laws in Provincial Offences Court, including reviewing evidence to ensure sufficiency, interviewing witnesses, providing disclosure, conducting trials and appeals;

Litigates in the Small Claims Court, Superior Court of Justice and Administrative Tribunals, drafts pleadings, conducts Examinations for Discovery, Pre-trials and Trials, etc.;

Responsibilities also include oral and written legal advice, opinions and reports, support to Council, interpretation and analysis of legislation and regulations, negotiation and preparation of contract and agreements, corporate/commercial work, preparation of by-laws.

Qualifications, Competencies Bachelor of Laws and member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada;

Minimum (4) four years of relevant Law Practice preferred;

Legal knowledge and experience in the areas of Prosecution, Litigation and Administrative Tribunal Law;

Knowledge of Municipal, Real Estate, Planning & Development law an asset;

Experience as a prosecutor conducting trials and appeals;

Extensive knowledge of the Provincial Offences Act, and related statues and regulations;

Experience in Civil Courts and Administrative Tribunals, Examinations for Discovery, Pre-trial Conference Hearings, Trials, Appeals, and Applications;

Extensive knowledge of the Courts of Justice Act, Rules of Civil Procedure, and related legislation;

Knowledge of government processes sufficient to work with Public Officials and Senior Municipal Managers;

Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands Ability to apply knowledge of legal practices, procedures, theory and practice of advocacy, relevant Statutes and case law while conducting litigation;

Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Proficiency in English language a necessity, fluency and ability to conduct trials in French language an asset;

Strong organizational and legal research skills;

Candidate will possess integrity, tact, and persuasiveness;

Ability to handle a significant workload in a fast paced, results oriented office and must be a team player;

Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize responsibilities;

Proficient computer skills, knowledge and experience of word processing and legal software systems;

Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check), at candidates expense.
