Position Overview
Note that this is a temporary position until approximately October 2015.

Performs semi-skilled equipment operation work of a relatively complex nature under the limited supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor. The work involves the operation and routine maintenance of a garbage truck for the purpose of picking up garbage and recycling materials and delivering them to a sanitary landfill site. The job involves heavy exertion and year round outside work under unusually dirty conditions with unpleasant odours. The incumbent is required to exercise constant care and attention to ensure the safety of others when operating the truck and to exercise courtesy and some tact in the answer of routine inquiries from the public concerning the collection of garbage and recycling materials. Close care and attention are required to prevent serious loss or damage to equipment and public or private property.


  • Drives garbage truck on city streets and lanes, exercises caution, and loads garbage and recycles materials as required.
  • Mounts chains in winter and assists mechanics in general maintenance of trucks.
  • Performs minor lubrication, maintenance, and repairs to truck as required.
  • May, on occasion, be required to clean and paint bins.
  • Answers inquiries from the public concerning related matters.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Requirements

  • Knowledge and skill in the safe operation of a garbage truck.
  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of minor mechanical repair and lubrication procedures.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Ability to read and understand collection route maps.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to exercise courtesy and tact in answering routine inquiries from the public.

  • Grade 10 or equivalent.
  • Class 3 driver’s licence, with air brakes ticket.
  • At least six month’s previous experience driving a tandem axle vehicle in city traffic and confined spaces.
  • For new hires, and for those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, no formal offer of employment will be made until an applicant completes and passes a criminal record check.
